For a while now, the Tony Stewart-owned Stewart-Haas Racing team has been relatively subpar with its performances. A couple of weeks ago, one would have attributed it to a Ford problem, and them not being as good as Chevy or Toyota. However, at the Darlington Raceway, Brad Keselowski entered the chat with his first win in a while and Ford’s first 2024 win. No matter, some would have considered that a lucky break. Barely a week later, Joey Logano entered the chat with his own Cup win at the NASCAR All-Star race.

Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing and Team Penske have already drawn blood. What’s SHR’s excuse? Unfortunately, they don’t even have an experienced head like Kevin Harvick to fall back on. What makes matters worse is that the team could be looking to sell some of its charters. According to reports, the charters could be sold for around $20 million, but whether it is for one or multiple is anyone’s guess.

Admittedly, the charter sales have varied over the years, but it is believed that the SHR charters will go for $20 million. Some would consider this a major financial loss, considering that Spire Motorsports bought the Live Fast Motorsports charter for $40 million. Coming back to SHR, though, there is also the question of who is willing to play ball. Potential suitors include 23XI Racing, Trackhouse Racing, and Front Row Motorsports.

Naturally, the downsizing of the Stewart-Haas Racing operation could be costly for Tony Stewart. With four cars, they had better chances in the team’s championship. However, if they start to lose cars, then all of their rivals will begin gaining ground. The current crop of drivers will also be under a fair bit of pressure for the current season.

If sources in the industry are correct, the future of Stewart-Haas Racing could be decided in a few weeks. With some of the drivers potentially being left in the lurch, no one can really blame them for trying to secure their future. As per a few insiders, some driver agents have begun putting out some feelers towards other teams about options for 2025 and beyond.

The likes of Chase Briscoe, Josh Berry, Noah Gragson, and Ryan Preece will be keen to stay on the Cup Series grid. Whether that will be in SHR colours or in a new environment, is anyone’s guess. It also doesn’t help teams that sponsorship revenue has been dwindling. In the last decade, several major big-budget brands have left the sport, like Anheuser-Busch, Smithfield Foods, and Hunt Brothers Pizza. What’s worse is that some of them have sought greener pastures in other teams. In short, SHR is really in the mud, and the drivers are in a dicey situation.
