Corey LaJoie to the Truck Series—Is this a step back or a fresh start for him?

At the start of the Olympic break, when some NASCAR drivers went on vacations and got married, Corey LaJoie was fired from Spire Motorsports. The team is on a revamp mission and is looking to head into the 2025 season to compete for the championship. As part of the process, they have made new hires, like the championship-winning crew chief Rodney Childers.

As for the #7’s plans for the 2025 season, they are uncertain. Many speculate he might move to a lower series, either Xfinity or Truck. Although they are just rumors, fans seem thrilled to have a second Corey in the Truck Series.

LaJoie’s Cup Series career has been marked by inconsistency. Despite seven seasons, he’s managed only four top-five finishes, with a best result of fourth place achieved at Spire Motorsports. The 2024 campaign has been more similar, with LaJoie winless and currently sitting in 28th position with a single top-five finish. And, as a result, the playoffs are out of reach for both LaJoie and Spire Motorsports, prompting the team to seek a major overhaul for the 2025 season.

Remember what Spire in their parting statement wrote?

In racing, there are always variables but one thing we all know, is this is a performance-based business, and it just hasn’t been there for several reasons. All those reasons are factored in when it comes to making a decision of this magnitude.” And they did take a performance based decision, leaving LaJoie hanging between the different tiers of NASCAR.

Now the rumors are; “the Truck Series will have two drivers named Corey in 2025.” As per the popular NASCAR insider “BrakeHard’s” post on X, LaJoie is speculated to be another Corey apart from the No. 11 driver, Corey Heim, who is currently No. 2 in the Truck Series standings. But at least for the starters, LaJoie could aim high and take some inspiration for Heim and his performance this season.

Have an interesting take?

LaJoie’s plans for the next season remain uncertain. Maybe a move to Tier 3, as BrakeHard guessed? The few runs he’s had in the Truck series have been decent. At one point in the Daytona race, he was in contention to win; he was leading but could not get a finish as he crashed out. A demotion for Corey might prove beneficial to him, as he could aim to get some wins, maybe a championship, and then come back with that increased confidence in the Cup.

But for him to join back Spire Motorsports seems like a difficult situation. As in a recent episode of SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, co-owner Jeff Dickerson made it clear by saying, “We have to win. Like, you don’t do these moves and not win. You don’t do Rodney. You don’t try to move on from Corey. You don’t bring in some of the guys that we’ve been bringing on behind the scenes, you know, without, you know what I mean?”

As part of the revamp journey, they brought in Rodney Childers, and there are also rumors of Justin Haley taking the #7 car. Some people speculate: would the duo of Rodney and LaJoie have been a success? Maybe, maybe not! However, that ship seems to have sailed.

However, what’s surprising is that even Corey LaJoie doesn’t think a demotion is for him. However, no teams are lining up to take him. In a previous episode of his podcast, ‘Stacking Pennies,’ he said, “There is not an Xfinity program that somebody’s going to call anybody up to drive for nothing and get paid to drive.” For this again, his stats are to blame. In his entire career, he’s only got 4 top-5 finishes and 9 top-10 finishes in all NASCAR series. Nothing is certain yet. But fans like the idea of LaJoie coming to Truck.

A demotion is not always bad. Particularly in this case, it might actually work in the #7’s favor. A fan thinks that Truck Series is the perfect place to be, he wrote, “Corey LaJoie fits perfectly in the truck series tbh. I think if he gets with a good team he’ll be a chase contender in that series.” Another fan echoed the same sentiment as he wrote, “He should be a championship contender & if he’s not he proves all the haters right.”

If he does enter the Truck Series, what are his possible options? Could Spire take him back? They have a successful team here with Rajah Caruth leading the faction. Maybe he can replace the rookie, Chase Purdy, who has not had the best 2024 season either. A fan thinking along the same lines wrote, “If Corey LaJoie moves down to Trucks, would it make more sense for him to sign with Spire’s Truck team?” A fan thought another possible team option could be Hendrick Motorsports. He wrote, “Corey Day in a Hendrick truck.”
