“I never imagined they would welcome me in this way.” After he left the sport in 2016, Carl Edwards never expected the Hall Of Fame recognition he would get. His career rivals that of few other drivers. He clinched 28 Cup Series race victories in just 12 years. However, several heartbreaking losses haunted his career, and the last one in 2016 preceded his sudden disappearance. But now, not only has Edwards been etched into NASCAR history forever, but he also has the chance to take up the microphone – according to a rumor.

NASCAR signed a $7.7 Billion media rights deal in December 2023 with Amazon, TNT, and Warner Brothers. Even Dale Earnhardt Jr. who retired from NBC early last year has been tapped to cover five races under Amazon and TNT Sports. Will Edwards join him?

Well, ‘Cousin Carl’ already has some experience in the broadcast booth. He spent seven years out of the spotlight after crashing out in the 2016 championship race. That was, until the spring of 2023. Carl Edwards visited Darlington Raceway then, being hailed as part of the ‘NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers’ roster. He was also invited to the FOX Sports booth, where Edwards called and analyzed the on-track action at the ‘Lady in Black’ alongside Mike Joy and Clint Bowyer. He reportedly turned out to be a dazzling broadcaster, as people caught up with what he was doing all these years.

Presently, with Carl Edwards getting more involved with the sport again, a certain rumor has hit the blocks. According to journalist Jenna Fryer, Edwards would be interested in television work. She also dropped a hint that maybe Edwards will occupy the Amazon booth for 2025 alongside Dale Earnhardt Jr. Fryer wrote on her Twitter post: “In this story I wrote yesterday, Carl Edwards told me he plans to be at the track some in 2025 and is interested in TV work. Coincidentally … Amazon has not announced its full booth yet.”

Well, it might be a mood dampener, but Amazon has announced its booth for 2025. However, there’s no saying whether they would add a fourth member or not. Currently, former HMS crew chief Steve Letarte, Dale Jr., and Adam Alexander will be in the Amazon booth calling races in 2025. Adding a legend like Carl Edwards to an already stacked list would just elevate the level of broadcasting.

For now, this is just a rumor doing the rounds. However, Carl Edwards displayed plenty of enthusiasm when he held the microphone in Darlington. He said, “I had more fun than I thought I would have last year at Darlington up in the booth with Clint and Mike. It really was enjoyable…I left thinking, man, that’s fun, and so I think if I were to come back in a regular capacity, what I enjoyed was being up in the booth. I enjoyed kind of calling the race to whatever degree I did there. That part I enjoyed. So maybe something like that. But I don’t have anything lined up right now, but definitely much more open to that than I ever have been.”

Carl Edwards’ reborn interest in NASCAR is something recent. He had legitimate reasons for leaving the sport in 2016.

Edwards was sure about his call

From the time when he handed out business cards to his last NASCAR event, Carl Edwards loved to race. He admitted that even today if somebody invites him to take the wheel, his excitement is like a starry kid’s. “This is the greatest thing ever. It’s Christmas.” So Edwards stressed that he wanted to make a clean cut from NASCAR instead of something half-hearted. Besides, he wished to spend more time with his family in Missouri. Edwards also became a serious sailor, having captained a ship with a crew abroad. He built a boat over the past three years and intends to sail around the world with his family.

However, at the end of 2016, people thought that the championship failure induced Carl Edwards to quit. Yet his off-track engagement clearly shows that he is content. The veteran himself admitted that he does not regret any of it. “I used to think that I worked really hard and I did all this stuff and it was because of all my dedication and persistence. Now, the more I see at 45 years old, after living a little bit more of life, it is simply that I was the most blessed person on Earth. All the pieces fell into place for me to get to do something that I only dreamed about. I’m truly just realizing how fortunate I am.”
