The LA Coliseum produced an exciting race, but it definitely exposed a few flaws in the system as well. During the race, a couple of NASCAR drivers were forced to end their races early. This included Chase Briscoe, Denny Hamlin and Tyler Reddick, who all were forced to retire early. What made this all the more heart-breaking was that Hamlin and Briscoe were in strong positions.

According to some investigations, a transaxle broke on Reddick’s car. Meanwhile, Hamlin encountered power steering issues, while Briscoe had trouble with his drivetrain. Now, the recent practice sessions have shown that the cars looked a little skewed on the racetrack. Although the two issues seem unrelated, it only goes to show that teams are still figuring out these cars.

Apparently, the rear wheel steer allowance is supposed to be around -0.55°/0.55° on the left and -0.55°/0.25° on the right. That was where the problem lay, so NASCAR decided to try and fix the issue. Now, there are talks of a rule change to change the allowable tolerances for rear wheel steer.

Will this solve the issue for the NASCAR cars?

According to reports, the teams have to make the changes before qualifying. In light of this, NASCAR will open the garage doors three hours earlier than scheduled to accommodate this. For the uninitiated, the skew is supposed to help the cars handle better on the track. This is because there is less air hitting the rear spoiler. The change will mean that it will make things easier for the cars to draft each other.

Hopefully NASCAR is able to sort out this issue quickly as the 2022 Daytona 500 is merely days away. Already, the first practice has come and gone, with these problems coming to light. NASCAR and the teams will be hoping that the troubles will soon be sorted out before the race arrives.
