“It was easy for them, they were born with a silver spoon. They had one foot already in the door.” Just how many times have you heard these comments being used to describe people who join the same field in which their parents were successful? Yet they still have to perform to survive, to sustain, to move ahead. In NASCAR that’s what Dale Earnhardt Jr did.

And in the recent episode of his podcast show, the Dale Jr. Download, the NASCAR Hall of Famer was joined by the rookie, Austin Cindric, who fits the same bill as him when it comes to nepotism.

When asked whether it affects him, Cindric said, “I think the only times I’ve worried about is how does it affect the people around me. Whether that’s the people working on my racecars or making decisions…you know those are the things that I need to make sure everyone knows who I am.”

But from that standpoint, whether if it’s race fans or people or even other drivers and maybe primarily other drivers…those are the things I can’t affect,” he continued. “And the only way to affect is by performing well.

“I say it like it’s easy and somedays it’s not but I think at this point in my career, it’s fairly normal and I’m at least in a good spot with it,” the Team Penske driver added.

He described how when he was nine, he went to his parents and announced, “‘I wanna have a life-changing discussion.’ “My parents were like, ‘What is this?’ And I’m like, ‘I wanna be a racecar driver. I’ve always wanted to be one, I want to try, I want to do it,’” Cindric continued.

To this, his father told him that he was going to be “too tall.”

But Austin Cindric persisted – “‘What about Michael Waltrip? What about Justin Wilson?’ I hit him back with those two and he was like, ‘Okay.’”
