NASCAR Quest for Cup Series Parity Culminates at Richmond After Historic 3-Mile Finish

All-in-all, the Toyota Owners 400 under the lights at Richmond was a pretty iconic event from the get-go. The rainfall brought out Goodyear’s new wet-weather tires for their oval debut and a beautiful rainbow graced the Virginia skyline on Easter night. However, what stands out the most amidst all the post-race fallout is that this year’s Richmond spring race brought the discussions of parity to a boiling point after the tightest field in NASCAR’s 76-year history finished the race within 3 miles of the race winner.

Richmond Rewrites NASCAR’s 76-Year-Old Record

Hendrick Motorsports’ latest tug-of-war with Joe Gibbs Racing in Richmond saw Denny Hamlin even out the wins column for Coach Gibbs’ organization. JGR is now tied with HMS for three wins out of seven races in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series. The #11 driver closed in the driver points margins, becoming the second driver to win multiple wins early in 2024. Furthermore, Hamlin has now effectively locked himself into the playoffs following up on #24 William Byron’s second-season victory for Rick Hendrick at COTA the week prior.

JGR added to their tally of the most race wins at the 0.75-mile oval, and the Toyotas looked fantastic again on a short track. Nevertheless, from Kyle Larson’s pole win and a P3 race finish to Team Penske’s Joey Logano claiming a podium at P2 in his #22 Ford, the 2024 Richmond race stood out as one of the most visually balanced experiences thus far.

This sentiment was solidified when Racing America released their latest #SrigleyStat on Twitter, courtesy of Joseph Srigley which read, “In the 76-year history of the NASCAR Cup Series, a full field has never finished closer than in Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400 at @RichmondRaceway — with all 36 drivers scored within four laps (three miles) of race-winner @dennyhamlin.” 

Toby Christie, renowned motorsports journalist, and a co-worker of Srigley echoed the celebrations, as he retweeted the original post from his official Twitter handle: “We did it, folks. The closest race in #NASCAR history from 1st place to last place. I know the race was a banger for the majority of it, but this speaks to the parity of the field in the Cup Series these days.”

The “parity” was clearly emphasized throughout the 407-lap overtime finish, which saw Toyota teammates tussling for track position in the final laps. The Chevys made rapid advances from the get-go with Kyle Larson and even his teammate Chase Elliott was able to lead his 19th lap this season, as he took over from P2 in the very beginning. Joey Logano, as well as RFK Racing’s Chris Buescher and Brad Keselowski, maintained Ford’s resurgent presence inside the top 10, as SHR rookie Josh Berry also showed flashes of brilliance in Stage 2 driving the iconic #4 Mustang Dark Horse for Tony Stewart’s team.
