Christopher Bell felt robbed. After a hard-fought NASCAR season, he believed he had done enough to make the Championship 4. But at Martinsville, everything changed. Bell pulled off a daring move, trying to edge out William Byron for the final playoff spot. It was reminiscent of Ross Chastain’s famous “Hail Melon” wall ride in 2022. However, NASCAR ruled it illegal, stripping Bell of his chance to fight for the title.
Bell didn’t hold back his frustration. “I feel cheated. I feel cheated out of a chance to compete for a championship,” he said. He believed the race was manipulated to protect Byron, as Chevrolet teammates helped him maintain his position. Bell further questioned NASCAR’s playoff format and raised multiple questions. However, Bell’s heartbreak led to something bigger.
Instead of seeing his frustration as a negative, NASCAR saw his leadership skills. While he failed to make it to the championship 4, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver is reportedly working behind the scenes to make key changes in the playoff format. NASCAR insider Mike Forde revealed how Bell, along with some other big names, is shaping the future of the sport at the NASCAR Playoff Committee.

Christopher Bell gets massive responsibility!
Last year, when Joey Logano won his third Cup series title, many fans and experts questioned NASCAR’s championship format. Many felt that drivers like Kyle Larson, who dominated throughout the season, should have gotten a shot at the championship race due to his consistency. Despite the criticism, NASCAR denied making any sudden changes and incorporated a committee to analyze the format and its challenges. NASCAR’s Managing Director of Racing Communications, Mike Forde, recently shed light on the committee’s discussions.
While many details remain confidential, he revealed key details of JGR driver Christopher Bell’s involvement. “NASCAR has really turned to him as a leader in the garage. We have recognized his talents; we’ve recognized his voice. I met with him again in January to talk about where we were with the playoffs and to invite him as part of this committee. He did speak up in the committee and gave some ideas and things that we should maybe think about. Rotation of the championship, for instance, was a big one on his plate—or on his mind,” said Forde.

Notably, this is not the first time Christopher Bell has spoken about the changes in the playoff format. While he has advocated to keep the current playoff system, he had demanded to move the championship race from Phoenix. Last year, he had vouched for Las Vegas and Kansas for the Championship 4 venue. However, he had added a caveat that the venue should not be under rain threats.
“I think it would be a great place to hold a championship. I think that was a question at media day about which track should get the championship event, and I said Vegas, but Kansas certainly could be an amazing championship race venue if the weather is not an issue. The Next-Gen car has just raced so well on the multi-lane intermediate racetracks,” he said in a media interaction.

Beyond Bell’s involvement, Forde hinted at another major figure playing a role in the discussions. Without naming names, he revealed that several members are Hall of Fame drivers and current team owners. He mentioned that many had podcasts, suggesting that one of them could be Dale Earnhardt Jr. The NASCAR Hall of Fame owns Dirty Mo Media, which is one of the biggest media moguls in the NASCAR world.
Notably, Dale Jr. has been an advocate for changes in NASCAR’s championship format. “Everyone has a different feeling about the way things should go. I’m a traditionalist. I think that the best way to determine your champion is the season-long race of running all of the races, the way we used to do it years ago. I feel like that’s the surest way to know that this person did it all right,” he had said in 2024.
His presence on the committee could mean that traditionalists have a voice in the room. While NASCAR isn’t bringing back the old system, Dale Jr. could push for changes that balance fairness with excitement. However, his presence on the committee is not confirmed, as Denny Hamlin and NASCAR Hall of Famer Kevin Harvick also have podcasts and are big influences in the NASCAR world. Notably, both have been outspoken about NASCAR’s format and have strong opinions on how the sport should grow.

Mike Forde hints at other members of the playoff panel!
The Playoff Committee isn’t just made up of drivers. It includes representatives from teams, manufacturers, and NASCAR itself. According to Mike Forde, the committee is cross-functional, meaning it brings together perspectives from all sides of the sport. Apart from Bell, other confirmed members of the roughly 25-member panel are Ben Kennedy and Julia Landauer.
Kennedy is NASCAR’s Senior Vice President for Strategy & Innovation. He serves as the committee’s chairperson. Meanwhile, Landauer is a former ARCA driver who Forde calls ‘Kennedy’s right-hand woman.’ She works closely with Kennedy and plays a major role in the decision-making process. Apart from them, the NASCAR Playoff Committee also includes a driver from all three manufacturers, i.e., Chevy, Ford, and Toyota. Forde also hinted that the committee also includes drivers who own teams.

This is a direct hint that Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski could be involved in discussions. Notably, Hamlin, along with NBA legend Michael Jordan, co-owns 23XI Racing. Amid the ongoing lawsuit between 23XI and NASCAR, it is difficult to believe that Hamlin has a place on the committee. Meanwhile, Keselowski co-owns the Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing team and could be a part of the NASCAR playoff committee. Apart from them, the committee also includes some broadcasters and other influential voices. For now, the road ahead remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: this committee has the power to shape NASCAR’s future.
