In the season opener, both Martin Truex Jr. and Christopher Bell encountered pit road mishaps that had a detrimental impact on their race outcomes, with Martin Truex Jr. finishing P18. Unfortunately, in the second race, Truex’s day was cut short as he exited the race as early as lap 4.

The No. 19 radioed his team about a potential issue he sensed on the backstretch. Following the incident, Truex’s car had to be towed to the garage, where his crew chief, James Small, delivered the disheartening message to the team that stated, “We’re done“.

NASCAR’s Vice President of Competition, Elton Sawyer conducted an analysis of the situation and provided insights into why #19 crew chief James Small was feeling frustrated. In a tweet, Elton Sawyer explained: ?If our fans will remember few years ago, maybe five or six I believe, we put in the DVP policy which is damage vehicle policy.?

Elton continued, ?And what that means is if you make contact with another car or with the wall, you can drive it back to pit road, and then you?re put on the seven-minute clock. You have seven minutes to repair your car and get back on the track meet the minimum speed and the clock clears. And if you are not able to drive it back then you?re done and how we arrived at that, More times than not when you can?t drive it back, you?ve got a serious mechanical issue and in this case, that?s exactly what happened to No 19?.

?He was able to drive off, but when he and we could see it from the tower the right front was toed out I don?t know, it looked like five inches from the tower so obviously he had either a control arm broken or a tow link that was bent or broken and in that case, I?d we have to hook to the car then we?re going to take it back to the garage and basically you?re out of the race. So, we totally understand the frustration of James Small,? Elton Sawyer concluded.

Following a string of unfortunate events for Joe Gibbs Racing‘s driver, Martin Truex Jr. now finds himself pushed back and in danger of being eliminated from the list of the final four contenders after the Round of 16. It’s undeniably disheartening, and Martin Truex Jr. opened up about the emotional aspect of these developments after the race.
