On August 20, 2023, the NASCAR nation had to bear the unpleasant reality when former Cup Series team owner and Rick Ware Racing’s competition director broke the news about his deteriorating health. Posting on his “X,” Tommy Baldwin Jr noted, “Today, I post news that no one ever wants to hear … I have cancer. It’s treatable, but this week of racing will be the last for a while for the Tommy Baldwin Racing team.” 

The veteran crew chief emphasized that the post was not to attract sympathy, but if his reassuring words could save a life, that’s great, and confirmed that he would take the fight, writing, “Going to take a break & begin treatment to beat it into the ground.” And so did the 57-year-old! By the grace of the Lord Almighty, Tommy Baldwin emerged victorious, starting a new chapter in life by beating the disease to the punch.

The 78-year-old battles his way back to life

After battling the onslaught of competition in NASCAR for years, Tommy Baldwin and his team. Tommy Baldwin Racing has been a solid presence in NASCAR’s Whelen Modified Tour. Baldwin fields a full-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour entry with Doug Coby as the driver. Everything was running smoothly; his driver was fourth in the championship standings after 11 races with one win when life took an unexpected turn in 2023.

His world really flipped on its head when he was diagnosed with cancer and was forced to shut down his team and battle the ailment with all his might. Even at his lowest, the former Cup Series team owner who fielded Dave Blaney never gave up: “I will beat this challenge like every other.” And gracefully he did. As the NASCAR nation welcomed a new year, Baldwin revealed the good news to his followers, dropping a tweet. 

He said, “I just want to give you guys a quick update. I just got my scan results back a little while ago and am happy to report that…I’m cancer-free now, so still in a rebuilding process of what’s been going on. But I can’t thank my family, my friends, all the raised fans, for all the support I’ve gotten last three, four, five months. It’s been a battle for sure.”

Before shifting their focus to Modifieds and Pro Late Models, Tommy Baldwin Jr and Co. had a solid presence in the Cup Series back in 2009, when it debuted with five different drivers, including Michael McDowell. Its Cup Series endeavor continued until 2020, sometimes entering multiple cars in the same race. Besides being a proud team owner, Baldwin was also an experienced crew chief in the elite division for nearly 23 years.

With the veteran coming back to life, exuding joy and delight, he revealed his team’s plans in the short-track world. He said, “Hopefully next week we get to announce all the good things we got going on in the short track world. We got some exciting news for Luke(Baldwin), some exciting news for Jack(Baldwin), as well as the other drivers that will be driving for TBR for 2024 season. So look forward to seeing everybody back at the track and thanks again for all the support.”
