A couple of weeks ago, Xfinity driver Josh Williams became an overnight sensation. After being told to park his damaged car, the driver took the instruction way too literally. To be exact, he parked the car at the start-finish line stretch and walked away sensationally. This bravado received an outpour of support, including from the veteran driver, Denny Hamlin. However, the latest revelation about Williams has led to a bit of a volte-face, and NASCAR fans turning on the sport.

Following the incident at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, the #92 driver was suspended by NASCAR for one race. This meant that he could not compete in the race at the Circuit of the Americas, and Alex Labbe replaced him.

Even more importantly, the suspension meant that he became ineligible for the Xfinity Playoffs. However, the latest information shared by renowned journalist Bob Pockrass is that Josh Williams has earned a waiver and will be eligible for the Xfinity Series Playoffs.

Why are NASCAR fans so up in arms about this?

As per the Xfinity rules, drivers have to attempt to qualify for every race to remain eligible for the Playoffs. Normally, the suspension would mean that it jeopardizes Williams’ chances of attempting to qualify. However, NASCAR chose to throw him a bone and approved a waiver to keep him in contention.

Unfortunately, there were a fair number of fans who were not pleased with NASCAR’s decision. Some were a bit baffled because they were under the impression that waivers were given on medical grounds. A disgruntled fan even declared NASCAR to be a joke.

Others declared that since he was suspended, he should not have been given the waiver.

Finally, some believed that he should not have been suspended in the first place, but to try and correct that with a waiver made little sense.
