The NASCAR penalty fiasco has been raging on for a while now. Aside from the Hendrick Motorsports drama, which is a separate mess on its own, there was the saga involving Denny Hamlin. Earlier last month, he had an on-track altercation with Ross Chastain and later incriminated himself on his podcast, Actions Detrimental. NASCAR was clearly listening in, as later on, they slapped him with a harsh penalty. Naturally, Hamlin appealed, as did the other parties for their respective penalties. However, Hamlin‘s appeal was rejected and the penalty was upheld.

In light of this, NASCAR spotters, Freddie Kraft, Brett Griffin, and TJ Majors discussed the situation in the latest episode of their podcast, Door Bumper Clear. Kraft said, “Now they’re saying, ‘If we give a penalty, it’s either a penalty or it’s not.’

“You can maybe modify within 50–75 points, but you can’t just go. ‘Alright, you have all your points back and well we’re going to keep the fine.’

“It’s either a penalty or it’s not, take it away or don’t.”

Brett Griffin did not like the decision that NASCAR took for Denny Hamlin

Griffin replied, “I’m spot off for it, kind of both sides. Like you said, you can’t have eight of them all modified. Then one that’s clearly doing a lot, gets all their stuff back. Not all of it, but the most important part was the points. That’s all really matters. When I saw Harvick or somebody, I think it was Harvick that said that they should be televised. It should be, why shouldn’t it be?”

Finally, Majors noted, “One of the other changes they made. These are the main two I saw, now they’re making the Appeals panel provide a summary or a disclosure of ‘how did you come to the decision you came to.'”

Hamlin’s own spotter Chris Lambert concluded, “Even if you gave that in writing, are we still going to believe it? If you would have gave me in writing, they’re still getting stuff back. Still getting penalized, which one is it?”

In the end, Hamlin had no choice but to accept the penalty and just move on. However, he will be sure to be more discreet the next time he is on his podcast.
