The performance of RCR duo, Kyle Busch and Austin Dillon has not been up to the mark this season. Busch, in particular, has consistently been among the slower cars, except for Atlanta, where he finished P2. The No. 8 star currently stands 15th in the standings without any playoff points. While there still time to make up for losses, should the persistent dismal runs be something to worry about? Well, Sirius XM Radio’s Brad Gillie certainly thinks so as he openly dissected the team’s “unpreparedness”.

The struggles of Kyle Busch and his No. 8 team this season

In an interview with GoPRNLive, Brad Gillie observed that Richard Childress Racing, particularly Busch’s team, seemed ill-prepared for the new season, starting at the Daytona 500. He pointed out the extensive changes in the pit crew and other organizational adjustments as indicators of the team’s lack of readiness.

Gillie said, “It just feels like they came into the season, I hate to use the word ‘unprepared‘ but maybe they weren’t ready for everything that was going to be thrown at them. And I think that’s being shown right now by literally all of the things they’re doing to make the changes to their organization.”

“It’s almost like they weren’t ready when the season started. And that’s really RCR as a whole. You look at Kyle Busch specifically, they spent the first five weeks just trying to filter out who their pit crew was going to be, with changes every single week before they settled with… Austin Dillon just got a new old crew chief once again this past week and Justin Alexander. And the week obviously didn’t go that well for them. But you know, they’re doing things, they’re making changes to their credit. They’re not sitting on their hands,” he added.

Kyle Busch has been focusing on enhancing his oval track performance since his P3 finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway race. His top performance on a non-super Speedway oval came with a 16th-place finish at Martinsville. This alone highlights how inefficient he has been this season.

Having said that, can the #8 driver turn his fortune around during the next weekend at Texas Motor Speedway?

Kyle Busch holds the second-highest number of laps (525) led at the circuit in his last three races at Texas. This, however, is a Truck Series record. Things are different in the Cup Series though. Busch so far has managed to win only 63 laps in the eight races so far. He is yet to acquire a stage win and a pole position. Apart from that, there are only two instances when he ventured into the Top 10.

Kyle Busch’s history of success at Texas Motor Speedway suggests it might serve as a pivotal moment in his 2024 season. His impressive record and recent victories in the Truck Series hint at the possibility of gaining momentum at the venue. Yet, the final results of any race are influenced by various elements, such as team tactics, car condition, and the circumstances on the day of the race.
