As the Cup Series race in Martinsville approaches, fans and insiders alike are eagerly anticipating the return of 2020 champion Chase Elliott. However, a recent warning from the legendary crew chief Steve Letarte has reminded fans that the Hendrick Motorsport driver is still susceptible to further harm.
In a video titled “What to expect when Chase Elliott returns at Martinsville” and posted on NASCAR’s official YouTube channel, NBC Sports’ Steve Letarte and MRN’s Todd Gordon discussed the return of the #9 Driver. During the conversation, Letarte shot a warning at Elliott. The seemingly innocuous statement holds a great deal of significance for Elliott, who is set to make his comeback at the Martinsville Speedway, having recovered from the injury that he sustained in a snowboarding accident prior on March 3.

Letarte began by expressing his surprise at Elliott’s choice of track to make a return and mentioned, “I won’t lie, I’m a little surprised he’s coming back at Martinsville while it is NASCAR’s slowest race track, that left leg gets a lot of use on the brake pedal.”
With 400 laps that are hard on the brakes at every corner in the Martinsville race, Todd Gordon expressed his concern for Elliott and said, “I hope he’s been through the physical therapy side of it.” He further added how he believes this to be extremely stressful for the 2020 champion.

Adding to this, Letarte expressed that it would be unfortunate if Elliott ends up retiring mid-race which would cause him to lose further laps. Although, he believes that the #9 Driver might not be too worried considering the Playoff rule this season.
