In the ever-evolving world of NASCAR, financial investments and team acquisitions often take center stage. Recently, Spire Motorsports made waves with their substantial investments in NASCAR charters and teams. However, it raised questions about their potential to challenge powerhouse teams like Hendrick Motorsports. However, insiders suggest that Spire’s spending spree may, in fact, benefit big team owners like Rick Hendrick.

In 2018, Cup Series charters were far from the hot commodities they are today. Barney Visser, owner of Furniture Row Racing, found himself with a valuable charter after winning the 2017 Cup Series title with Martin Truex Jr. Yet, he decided to exit the sport, unable to find a buyer for the charter.

That’s where Spire Sports + Entertainment entered the picture, helping Visser locate a buyer for the coveted charter. The charter market was in its infancy, but Spire recognized its potential.

Big moves by Spire Motorsports will eventually end up helping big team owners like Rick Hendrick, say NASCAR insiders

During the race weekend in Bristol, Spire Motorsports executed a complex deal by purchasing the charter from Live Fast Motorsports on behalf of Trackhouse Racing. This move allowed Spire to run Zane Smith in a third Cup car, while Trackhouse plans to expand to three full-time cars in the future.

This isn’t the only move Spire has made. They leased charters to Trackhouse Racing, facilitated Kaulig Racing’s transition from an Xfinity Series team to a Cup team, and engaged in multiple charter transactions. This proactive approach by Spire has significantly contributed to the charter market’s growth. The $40 Million purchase by Spire marks a sixfold increase in charter value since the early days of charter trading.

While Spire Motorsports‘ spending spree might appear threatening to the established big teams like Hendrick Motorsports. NASCAR Insiders have a different perspective. Brett Griffin spoke about this during a recent episode of the DBC podcast. He said, “They [Spire Motorsports] were a bottom-tier team. I don’t consider them a bottom-tier team anymore. But they were a bottom-tier team, and now they’re now a mid-level team. And the amount of capital and the amount of money they are sinking into this thing it makes Rick Hendrick, Roger Penske, Stewart Haas, it makes all those teams and charters more valuable.”

Bubba Wallace‘s spotter, Freddie Kraft, chimed in and said, “See, I don’t know about the business side of things to accurately comment on this. But they just bought probably, I would say the least valuable charter in our series for $40 million.”

The surge in charter value driven by lower-tier teams like Spire Motorsports has ripple effects within NASCAR. As these teams expand, they require additional personnel, including crew members, spotters, crew chiefs, and pit crews. Larger teams like Hendrick Motorsports become key sources for supplying the necessary talent and expertise.
