It’s been a while but it’s still incredible to think about the way the NASCAR Cup Series race ended at the Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday. The three-wide finish saw Trackhouse Racing’s Daniel Suarez take the checkered flag by a matter of inches. But things could have been a lot different, and it turns out that 23XI Racing driver Bubba Wallace had a huge part to play in how things turned out.

Wallace has probably had the best start of his career in any Cup Series campaign as he is the only driver at the moment to have two consecutive top-five finishes. The 30-year-old will be looking to keep his streak going next weekend at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and hopefully win a race to punch an early ticket to the playoffs.

How Bubba Wallace inadvertently assisted Daniel Suarez to win in Atlanta

He might not have been the victor of the race in Atlanta, but he sure made Daniel Suarez’s job a lot easier. However, it was not intentional. On a recent episode of the Door Bumper Clear podcast, Bubba Wallace’s spotter Freddie Kraft revealed his driver’s plan in the closing laps of the race. If the veteran spotter’s words are to be believed, then things did not go to plan for the driver of the #23 car.

It’s no secret that Bubba Wallace and Ryan Blaney are the best of friends. From being Star Wars fanatics to sharing the funniest of banters on social media, the two Cup Series competitors have built a camaraderie unlike any other driver-driver friendship. Towards the end of the race, the 23XI Racing star planned to get behind the #12 and push his friend to victory. However, damage sustained earlier on in the event meant that the #23 did not have what it took to get the job done.

“Bubba basically decided the race. We go in the corner and got tight. I think he was gonna try and square Blaney up and push Blaney to the win cause obviously they’re friends and we get right and lose all our momentum. We had a lot of damage from the first wreck, our splitter was killed, so we were tight all race anytime we had air on our nose. He goes in the corner and gets tight and if he doesn’t get tight, I think he pushes Blaney easily to the win off of 4,” Kraft said.

He might not have helped his friend win in Atlanta, but Bubba Wallace has a lot to be proud of. Two back-to-back top-five finishes after his best-ever career year in the Cup Series is proof that the driver of their #23 is improving and gradually reaching that elite class of drivers.

Taking to X after the race in Atlanta, the 23XI Racing star opened up about the race he had in Atlanta. Racing super-speedways is one of the most physically and mentally taxing jobs a NASCAR driver can ever think of. From being in constant communication with your spotter to being switched on for the entirety of the event (which lasts more than 3 hours), Bubba Wallace experienced all the emotions and came out with flying colors.

“May sound like a joke but my brain is mush. The psychological piece to plate racing is massive. Yes it’s big any other race but receiving and digesting the info from @FreddieKraft lap by lap, corner by corner to make sure you’re in the right spot is intense,” he wrote on his X handle.

“You have to be ON from start to finish. Restarts at 1.5 miles is a lot like this..but that’s 2-3 laps. Not 460. Proud of this 23 team. I set us back today but nothing we haven’t overcome before. There is something special with this group this year!”

“Time to really lock in and get the stars aligned. Back to back top5s is great start… but there is 24 more left.  Y’all enjoy it for me. Bourbon me,” he concluded.

The job ahead is simple: keep the form up, try to win a race, and book a playoff spot as soon as possible. Wallace certainly would not want to be in the same situation he was in the last regular season race of 2023. It will be interesting to see how the driver of the #23 performs for the rest of the season.
