NASCAR is all about intense competition, high-speed action, and unexpected twists. As the NASCAR Cup Series heats up, defending champion Joey Logano finds himself facing a challenging road ahead. Joey Logano has been in the mix, but there’s a sense that something’s missing. NASCAR insiders suggest that Ford cars might face an uphill battle in the championship chase. Chevrolet and Toyota had started the season on the front foot. And the Fords have been trailing behind for most of the season.
In a candid conversation on the Door Bumper Clear podcast, the hosts discussed the championship race contenders. Although they acknowledged the recent resurgence of Ford with 3 wins in a row, they don’t think that it is enough to beat Chevy and Toyota. This, however, stands in stark contrast to what the Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr recently suggested.

During their usual ‘Spot On’ and ‘Spot Off’ discussion, the topic of whether the Fords can challenge for the championship came up. Brett Griffin and Freddie Kraft immediately brushed off the question with their firm stance. They spoke about the fact that the Fords have been struggling almost every weekend. They especially pointed out the Fords of Team Penske’s #22 of Joey Logano and #2 of Austin Cindric. “Obviously they need more speed. A lot of their cars… I mean you look at some of the Penske cars are struggling every week. The #22 and #2 are just flat-out slow.”
“Looking ahead to the championship, do you think Ford is a manufacturer to beat looking at the rest of the races?” Casey Boat asked.
“No, they’re last,” Griffin asserted. “They’d be the last one I’ll pick just based on the tracks that are coming up and I mean you never know.”
“Listen I think that last year, Blaney and Logano dominated that Phoenix race, so I think if they get there they would be… you know they’re right there. I still think Truex is the guy to beat right now. Just speed and consistency,” Kraft added.
Just a couple of weeks back, Joey Logano himself admitted that they are not where they need to be in terms of playoff points. “Yeah, I think we’re getting better um you know we’re not where we need to be yet,” said Logano when asked about the approaching playoffs.
“But we’re making progress and this is the time of year where we typically see a little bit of an uptick and start to get we get a little momentum into the playoffs and hopefully that’s what we see here next few weeks. We’re starting to make up for where we’re at we’re still too far back in points we still don’t have enough playoff points.”

However, amidst all the doubts surrounding the Fords, Dale Earnhardt Jr believes that they have come a long way into this season and they are capable of mixing things up in the championship.

With Chevrolet and Toyota initially benefiting from rule adjustments, Ford’s resurgence is a testament to their resolve. Recent successes are changing the narrative and launching new contenders into the championship conversation. Dale Jr acknowledges the uphill battle Ford faces, while also acknowledging the potential of Ford drivers to change the course of the championship.
In conversation with his podcast co-host Mike Davis, Junior said, “Some of the Chevys have struggled here lately. The Fords are now—you know if they can keep this going, I think they’ll be extremely impressive. And what it does is it launches new players into that championship conversation. A guy like Joey Logano, who basically snuck into the championship race last year, and won the championship.”
“But as the Fords are getting stronger, this certainly pushes some of the Ford drivers back into the conversation of who can win the championship. Six of the top ten in the race at Richmond were Fords,” he concluded.
