Ending his 17-year drought at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Martin Truex Jr claimed the Crayon 301 Cup Series race win on Monday. Leading for 254 of the slated 301 laps, the #19 Joe Gibbs Racing driver also claimed the stage one and stage two wins. While Truex Jr chomped on the claw of New Hampshire’s traditional lobster prize to celebrate the win, his final laps radio banter claimed the spotlight.

Many speculated the banter to be a lighthearted joke, but NASCAR insiders Brett Griffin and Freddie Kraft believe otherwise.

During the final laps of the Crayon 301, JGR’s #20 Christopher Bell spun out and hit the wall, warranting a caution. As caution flew out, race leader Martin Truex Jr was agitated by the late caution, muttering, “Jesus, man. C’mon people.” Upon learning it was his teammate who caused the caution, Truex Jr ranted to his crew chief over the radio saying, “We should have a company policy that says when one of your teammates is leading, don’t crash by yourself.”

Speaking on a recent episode of the Door Bumper Clear podcast, NASCAR spotters Brett Griffin and Freddie Kraft claimed the JGR driver’s radio attack on his teammate was serious. “Listen it’s hard racing, it is what it is, but Truex is not kidding. And in his mind, the problem is he thought this and he pressed the button and told everybody this. He’s 43 years old I mean, he’s been in just about every scenario in a race car that you can be in, and he knows he’s dominated this race, and he doesn’t want to lose it because a teammate did something stupid,” Brett Griffin said.

Hearing Griffin’s words, Freddie Kraft joked about how Truex Jr wouldn’t have had the same reaction if he learned Ty Gibbs (Joe Gibbs’ grandson) had crashed. Further iterating the Kaulig Racing spotter’s point, Kraft added, “I don’t think obviously, Christopher obviously didn’t intend to ruin Martin’s race, but add like to Brett’s point, I guess you could try to back her down a little bit, but yeah you’re not going to. You’re going for everything you can especially when you know you’ve got a really good race car and you’re kind of been put behind.

While the spotters put forth their views on Martin Truex Jr’s rant, NASCAR fans on the other hand called out the JGR driver for his insensitive comments.
