The Chicago NASCAR event has seen tremendous success. Despite the controversial curtailing of the Xfinity Series, the Grant Park 220 event managed to live up to the hype. Although the race enthralled the entire motorsports community, its announcement was not met with much enthusiasm. NASCAR’s greats had concerns about the street circuit’s rough surface, while a few spotters had their own opinions regarding the city of Chicago.
At the forefront of spotters who had taken a subtle dig at the city, was Brett Griffin, spotter for the Kaulig Racing team. Having made multiple controversial remarks against Chicago, the spotter faced severe backlash from the NASCAR community.
Addressing the backlash on a recent episode of the ‘Door, Bumper, Clear’ podcast, Griffin broke his silence.

“I’ve Caught a Lot of Sh*t” Brett Griffin Reveals the Reason Behind Trashing Chicago
When NASCAR announced last year that it would be adding the Chicago Street Course to its 2023 calendar, Brett Griffin wasn’t pumped. Last year speaking on the DBC podcast, Griffin revealed he didn’t want to step foot in Chicago, and he’d rather go to Atlanta. Then earlier this year, the Kaulig Racing spotter took a sly dig at Chicago’s street violence, asking if the perpetrators get arrested or go scot-free.
Do they arrest these people or let em just take a few days off and get back after it?

Drawing severe backlash for his insensitive comments, Brett Griffin has now broken his silence.
“It was a fun weekend man. I enjoyed watching Chicago on television…Obviously, I’ve caught a lot of sh*t for talking a lot of sh*t,” Griffin said, addressing the backlash on the latest episode of the podcast.
Further revealing the reason for acting out against the city of Chicago, Griffin added, “So here’s my biggest struggle, and I think some of y’all with a brain will understand where I’m coming from. NASCAR signed a three-year deal to go to Chicago. After they signed that three-year deal, a new mayor got elected. That new mayor already has said that they don’t know if they want us back anymore.”
“So NASCAR is coming in there with teams, with NBC, and NASCAR is spending tens of millions of dollars. I’ve heard north of $40 million to come in and put this show on. And so before we even start up a race car, Ben Kennedy with NASCAR is having to say he doesn’t know if he’ll be back next year.”
“So when I look at my sport and my peers and my team owners and TV partners and I look at how they want to go in and invest gazillions of dollars into this community, and whether you like it or not, that what it is. It’s all about money. And so for you to say as a city, you don’t want us back for the next two years and we can’t already be selling tickets and talking about it, it really pisses me off,” said the spotter, revealing his frustration regarding the developments.
As the Kaulig Racing spotter addressed the issue, fans were left disappointed yet again.

While the Kaulig Racing spotter made an attempt to justify his stance, fans on Twitter quickly called him out for deflecting from the issue, which led to the backlash. Pointing out his deflection, one fan commented, “Deflecting at its finest.”
Another fan pointed out how Brett Griffin had completely changed the narrative saying, “A completely different song than what he’s been singing for weeks”.
“nice job walking back every horrible opinion he had about chicago after it was a tremendous success. why does a spotter care how the sanctioning body spends its money? who cares about the mayor? weak and boring. Next”
