More than a competition, the Chili Bowl is a festival that celebrates dirt racing. Following a week of dirt racing in the Tulsa Shootout, the first Golden Driller competition of the racing season, it has taken its rightful place in sprint car history. Intense competition and close-quarter action would be some words to describe the scenario, but what follows the hard racing is a night of fun and frolic in the team camps.

Exploring the SageNet Center premises, Matt Weaver was surprised to find a relatively low number of factions celebrating. He stated, “Still, some parties to be found and some fun to be had. This is what Chili Bowl every night kind of turns into depending on how early everyone gets done.”

“Everyone kind of congregates to their respective groups. Interestingly enough, I don’t know, maybe because it’s Monday, everything seems pretty tame right now. I think on Wednesday or Thursday, you can see people playing songs and shooting T-shirt guns, all sorts of fun.”

It is only natural for the competitors to relax themselves after a tiring day of dirt racing. With the pool of drivers across different divisions turning out to be huge, there are umpteen methods of sharing a light moment. As Matt Weaver continued his review of the Chili Bowl’s first day, he commended how it was organized on its inaugural day.

Some concerns over the safety of drivers marred the 2023 edition of the Chili Bowl. While some people would reminisce about the horrific crash involving Ashton Torgerson, Matt Weaver thought the Tulsa Expo Speedway was designed perfectly this time.

“Really good race track tonight,” stated Weaver. I thought the Tulsa Expo Speedway was as perfect as you can imagine it. I don’t know how much of that is the new tire; how much of that was Brad Chandler’s track prep, but it was good. Hopefully, we can replicate that on Saturday.”

The Chili Bowl has lived up to its reputation throughout the years. While popular drivers have lamented the lack of the winning prize, it has yet to deter aspiring drivers from participating in it. The prestige of the Golden Driller has succeeded in attracting them with ease. Not just drivers but even Matt Weaver has been drawn toward the electric atmosphere.

Speaking about his affinity for the event, Weaver added,This is fun. I love Chili Bowl. I love covering it, riding about it, talking about it, walking around in this building, and sharing it with you guys.”
