Gold, who was the voice of NASCAR for about 34 years, announced in January 2023 that he had been diagnosed with a “Treatable form of Cancer”. Just as he was diagnosed, he took an immediate leave of absence from his duties as a Crimson Tide announcer to focus on his treatment and recovery.

In a tweet posted by Crimson Tide Sports Network, Gold published a statement and said, “I want to thank everyone for their well wishes and prayers,” he further added, “After extensive testing, I have now been diagnosed of a treatable form of cancer. I’m already making progress and hope to get back behind the mic again soon. Roll Tide!”

After months of treatment, Gold’s Friend Tom Stipe announced on social media that he had completed his cancer treatment and had rung the bell, a symbolic gesture that marks the end of cancer treatment.

For over three decades, Eli Gold’s voice has been synonymous with NASCAR. He began his broadcasting career in 1976, calling races for the Motor Racing Network (MRN) before joining the NASCAR on NBC team in 2001.

Gold’s distinctive voice, with its deep, rich timbre and southern drawl, has become an integral part of the NASCAR experience for fans all over the world. Apart from his radio duties, he also worked as the primary TV commentator for TNN’s coverage of the Cup Series for multiple years. During this time, he collaborated with analysts, such as Buddy Baker, Dick Berggren, and Phil Parsons. Additionally, he provided NASCAR coverage for major TV networks like ESPN, CBS Sports, and NBC Sports.

In addition to his work with MRN, Gold has also worked as a play-by-play announcer for college football and basketball games. He has won numerous awards for his work, including the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame’s Distinguished Alabama Sportsman Award.
