Powell revealed, “I knew Dale Sr. well. Powell recalled, “He was a personal friend of mine. We were friends for a number of years, a lot of years.” When Powell acquired Florence Motor Speedway, it became a significant part of Dale Jr.’s early racing journey.
Dale Sr. had plans for his son’s career and reached out to Powell. “He wanted Dale Jr. to race Florence a couple of years before he moved him up anywhere else,” Powell explained. Dale Sr. preferred Dale Jr. to compete in Florence and Myrtle Beach, steering clear of the Charlotte area

Dale Jr. would race at Florence on Fridays and then make the journey back home afterward. “He didn’t want him to spend the night down here,” Powell said. “He was very controllable about Dale Jr. He wanted to take care of him, you know?”
