It is no secret that the NASCAR: Full Speed docuseries has been a massive success. However, neither the sport’s organizers nor Netflix might have expected the response it has received. The show was first made after being inspired by Formula One’s Drive to Survive to raise the popularity of stock car racing. It’s safe to say that NASCAR has achieved that particular objective and the likes of Denny Hamlin and William Byron have gained a lot from it as well.
Given the quality of production, fans expected the series to be worth a fortune. However, when veteran journalist Adam Stern reported the production to be $5 million, people were pleasantly surprised. It was not as much as they had expected, considering how good the scenes looked on screen.

In today’s world, social media metrics play a big role in determining how popular a sport is. Not just sports, this applies to everything. Recently, veteran journalist Seth Eggert shared some social media metrics of NASCAR after the show was released and they have all increased drastically, that too, within the span of just one month.
The first part of the docuseries was heavily about the lives of Hamlin and Byron. The Joe Gibbs Racing star was one of the pivotal figures of the entire show, and his Hendrick Motorsports counterpart was not far behind. According to Eggert, Hamlin saw an increase of 20,940 followers on Instagram, 3,397 followers on Twitter, and 715 followers on Facebook. It seems like the IG verse has especially taken a liking to the “villain” of the Cup Series.
In the month since @NASCAR Full Speed debuted on @netflix, @dennyhamlin has also made gains on social media:

William Byron also saw quite an impressive rise in his social media metrics. His story of becoming a motorsports athlete from being just a gamer inspired several people. The driver of the #24’s never-say-die attitude on the track also played a big role in impressing new audiences. Byron saw an increase of 14,910 followers on Instagram, 2,749 followers on X, and 1,741 followers on Facebook.
2024 @DAYTONA 500 winner @WilliamByron's gains since @NASCAR: Full Speed debuted on @netflix are sizable as well:

But it’s not just Denny Hamlin and William Byron who gained a lot of followers. Every single driver featured in a show saw a rise in their social media followers as well. And the biggest winner of them all was NASCAR. The project was better than what they could have ever imagined and things are looking good for the future. And the best part? Their social media metrics were the best on Instagram, a platform mainly used by the youth.

NASCAR’s Instagram handle saw a whopping 258,030 new followers. This is proof that young motorsports enthusiasts were impressed by the series, as IG is a platform majorly used by the younger population. On X, the official handle gained 17,844 new followers, and on Facebook, it saw a rise of 40,872 in follower count. That’s a total of around 316,000 new followers across all platforms.
But there are often doubts about these metrics. How are they different from any other year? February is the month when the Daytona 500 takes place. Isn’t it normal to have more followers during this period? Well yes, it is, but not as much as what was reported. Eggert backed this up by comparing the numbers of last year and this year for the same month.
In February 2023, NASCAR saw a 32,207 increase in Instagram followers, a 6,739 increase in X followers, and 14,839 in Facebook followers. These numbers are nowhere near what 2024 has seen and there is no doubt that NASCAR: Full Speed played a massive role in that. That’s exactly what everyone wanted, and it is turning out to be a success.

The fact that Instagram has seen the highest numbers is a huge plus for NASCAR, given the age demographics of users who regularly use the platform. Netflix will also be ecstatic about their success and fans will be waiting with bated breath for the second season, which they hope will have more episodes than the first.
