What comes to mind when one says Watermelon? It’s Ross Chastain, right? Imagine hosting a late-model race at a track called Watermelon Capital Speedway and then not inviting Chastain. Wouldn’t that be unfair? Well, that is exactly what fans have been upset about lately. Recently, it was announced that a super late model race would be taking place at the aforementioned track. However, among a slew of NASCAR drivers invited, they seem to have forgotten the one and only Ross Chastain.

As per the report, Hendrick Motorsports driver, Chase Elliott, along with William Byron, and David Ragan, would be running at Speedfest this weekend. But Chastain was not named anywhere. However, on the brighter side, Elliott is set to return to late-model racing after a two-year hiatus.

The race would be taking place at the Watermelon Capital Speedway in South Georgia. Fellow driver Jake Garcia will join him, with their team leader, Turner, overseeing their performance. Despite being frequently approached to participate in Super Late Model races in the past, Elliott had only agreed to compete if his preferred crew chief, Ricky Turner, was going to be there.

NASCAR fans upset over Ross Chastain’s snub

The absence of the infamous ‘watermelon man’ did upset a few people. The fans would have enjoyed having Chastain race at the track, aptly named after his nickname. Maybe burst a watermelon or two after the race, who knows?

While the race in general might be great, this was a major missed opportunity for the organizers to invite Chastain. However, the organizers might not have a single clue about why people call him the ‘watermelon man’. Because if they did, Chastain would obviously be on the list. But regardless, we hope to look forward to the upcoming race. Also, how does Elliott fare in late-model racing? Considering the boy from Dawsonville spent much of his younger days racing in late models. The overall hunch might say that he would fare well. But again, he would be a bit rusty being out of those cars for a couple of years now.
