Is Kyle Busch's Cup Series misery a sign of his decline, or just a rough patch?

While the NASCAR world is at a standstill because of the two-week Olympics hiatus, Kyle Busch is enjoying a much-needed break in Italy. Rowdy has had a difficult season so far, with his winless streak extending to 43 races after the Brickyard 400 and his premature end at Indianapolis being his sixth DNF in the last eight races. His last win came at Gateway in 2023, and with four races to go before playoffs begin, it’s unlikely Busch will make it to the postseason this year.

That hasn’t stopped fans from having some fun at Rowdy’s expense, comparing him to pitcher Ky Bush, who will be making his debut for the struggling Chicago White Sox in Major League Baseball.

The White Sox have lost 20 consecutive games, which has prompted the team to call up pitcher Ky Bush to make his debut against the Oakland Athletics. Similarly, Kyle Busch’s team Richard Childress Racing is having a difficult time in the Cup Series as well, with both Rowdy and Austin Dillon having failed to secure a single win in 22 races. With four regular-season races to go, it’s unlikely either driver will make it to the playoffs, while both drivers have a staggering eight DNFs between them, a tally that could only increase in the remaining races.

In an interview on the Pat McAfee show, Kyle Busch was brutally honest about his struggles in the No. 8 Chevrolet Camaro this season. He said, “Our cars have not been that great right now. We’re working on it. I mean, we’ve come to a lot of things of what we’re kind of learning about and figuring out. Last year, we were good. Like I joined RCR, we won three of the first 15 12, 15 races or something like that, it was pretty good and then we we haven’t won since. So it’s been a bit of a dry spell, so we’re working on it.”

From multi-car collisions, running out of fuel, and technical problems, it seems like bad luck has been following Kyle Busch all season. His No. 8 Chevy has struggled with speed and handling, and the retirement of Andy Petree as tournament director for Richard Childress Racing hasn’t helped either. With Keith Rodden having joined in an interim capacity, one can’t help but feel that the team is currently in a transition, that has played a big role in Kyle Busch’s struggles this season.

At the age of 39, Busch doesn’t have many years at NASCAR’s top level left, and he certainly cannot afford to spend his twilight years in a team that is struggling to compete. However, Rowdy has a contract with Richard Childress Racing until 2025, and despite rumors circulating about a potential move to Spire Motorsports after Corey LaJoie’s departure, the prospect looks unlikely unless the team’s co-owner Jeff Dickerson is willing to break the bank. Despite Rowdy’s ongoing struggles, fans couldn’t stop themselves from making tongue-in-cheek comments on social media, comparing Kyle Busch to White Sox pitcher Ky Bush.

With Kyle Busch in the middle of a 43-race winless streak, fans on Reddit began a discussion about whether Rowdy’s struggles were due to him starting a baseball career under a similar name. White Sox pitcher Ky Busch is all set to make his debut against the Oakland Athletics, which prompted fans to draw similarities between the two. As things stand, the Chicago White Sox are on track to extend their losing record into the fall, which would make them join the list of teams that have the worst record in MLB history. This prompted a fan to write, “Being in the White Sox system certainly would explain any and all struggles.” Another fan went on to say, “Bro choose the worst team to start it with”.

The offense has been one of the Chicago White Sox’s biggest weaknesses this season. The team has a .218 batting average and their current rate of 3.1 runs scored per game is the lowest for any team since 1972. Moreover, the White Sox have not scored over a run in 31 games, highlighting the team’s lack of offensive firepower. On this note, one fan on Reddit wrote, “Kyle Busch might unironically have a better batter average than most of the current White Sox lineup.”

One fan drew a comparison between Kyle Busch and the legendary Michael Jordan. Jordan, who left the Chicago Bulls at the peak of his power, joined the Chicago White Sox on February 7, 1994, to pursue a baseball career. With Ky Bush making his debut for the struggling MLB team, a fan wrote on Reddit, “He’s going for that Michael Jordan career arc.” Echoing that sentiment, a fan said, “Michael Jordan X Kyle Busch”.
