The United States started off on a significant note at the soccer World Cup in Qatar. With their first match against the Welsh team, the USA strung out a decent 1-1 draw. If not for the late goal from their opponents, they could have scripted a huge win to start off their journey in the tournament.
They followed it up with a massive 0-0 draw against European giants, England. In no way were the Americans second-favorites during the match, dominating in certain parts of the game.
The last match was one with a lot of different connotations attached to it. Playing against Iran, the match came in the backdrop of certain off-field incidents that increased the heat around the game. The USA pulled off a significant 1-0 win that put them through to the next round.
With one win and two draws from their three matches, the USA had found themselves past the group stage and into the pre-quarterfinals (or Round of 16). But their fixture was against no minnows, as it pitted them against the Netherlands.
The Dutch are amongst the best teams in the world in soccer. They have been three times runners-up in and were on the hunt for their first World Cup. In a well-contested game, the USA lost 1-3.
The Stars and Stripes were out, but they weren?t down. A brilliant performance from the young boys. Amidst all this, the sports world faced the sad loss of a renowned journalist, Grant Wahl.
The NASCAR fans put forth their sentiments
But through all that, there was one constant – Grant Wahl. Grant Wahl was one of the best soccer journalists in America and was employed with FOX Sports for coverage in Qatar.
Whether it was reading a story he wrote or listening to a podcast he was on or watching Grant Wahl speak, I not only learned something but also was inspired by his dedication to his craft. RIP. https://t.co/w0d8NJQeG8

Wahl passed away on the night of 10th December, in an untimely demise for the world. Fans of NASCAR showed their respects to him –
Ten years ago, soccer was a game I did not know & Grant was so informative to this new fan, will miss him & his work very much.
Rest in Peace @GrantWahl 🙏🏻— Brad (@bradford92837) December 10, 2022
He was just as hard working and dedicated as you are to racing and NASCAR in particular! He got the stories, the inside info and everyone in the soccer community liked him.
