Until Wednesday, this was turning out to be just another week for the people of Winchester, Indiana. But as Thursday morning came, the home of the track that reads, “Through these gates pass the bravest drivers in the world,” became one where its people were compelled to emulate that same bravery as they watched their town weather a storm. Literally.

38 people injured, 22 homes destroyed, and more than 110 badly damaged due to wind gusts of 155 to 165 mph combing through Winchester. “I’m shaken. It’s overwhelming.” This was the effect a severe tornado had on Mayor Bob McCoy. After wreaking havoc in Ohio, it reached the doorstep of the Winchester Speedway. “I heard what sounded like a train, and then I started hearing sirens. I’ve never heard that sound before. I don’t want to hear it again.”

“As day breaks, a small community holds together as one giant family… so proud of our emergency service teams,” wrote the Winchester Speedway’s official Facebook account. Out of all the Indiana towns affected, Winchester and Selma reportedly suffered the worst fate. According to 13 WTHR, officials stated that a tornado struck the town’s trailer park and resulted in the destruction of a local church as well.

A Taco Bell restaurant was destroyed by the tornado’s strength, while only the drive-thru menu survived the whole ordeal. Meteorologists are working on confirming if the cause of the destruction was a tornado. Medical services were also requested throughout the counties, with many injuries sustained by vehicular occupants. With restaurants, churches, and motorhomes destroyed, the magnitude of the destruction was hard to digest.

The track, also known as the ‘World’s Fastest 1/2 Mile,’ came close to calamity as the town was declared a “mass casualty” zone. The Speedway’s official Facebook account shared an update, “Our thoughts at this time are to the families and businesses devastated by the storms that hit Winchester tonight.”

The statement revealed how funnels hovered over the track as the winds picked up and blew over two miles east, showcasing just how violent the winds truly were. The statement continued, “The town has been declared mass casualty as our emergency services huddle together to protect us. We extend prayers to all affected.”

Aside from the Speedway’s management extending their support toward the ones struck by the tragedy, the NASCAR community also stepped forward to share condolences for those impacted.
