Not all were happy when NASCAR announced that the spring race at the Richmond Raceway would take place on Easter Sunday. A lot of people had their reservations about it and after a poor turnout, NASCAR seems to have decided against hosting races on that day again. However, the fans are divided about this and it has become a debate between family time and viewership. They recently made their opinions clear on Reddit.

Are Easter races and LA Coliseum set to be scrapped in the future?

Easter is no doubt one of the biggest holidays of the day and everyone wants to spend it with their family, including the NASCAR community. Fans who saw the race said that the stands were empty at the track as not a lot of people wanted to leave their homes on such an auspicious day. Despite the exciting race, the atmosphere was perhaps nowhere near what NASCAR expected it to be.

According to journalist Chris Myers, “Don’t expect Nascar to race on Easter Sunday in the near future or at the Los Angeles Coliseum .. but you can expect racing in Southern California at a track yet to be determined.”

On the surface, the decision about not having races on Easter looks good, but not everyone agrees. Fans of the sport lit up the comments section of a Reddit post about the matter and there seemed to be an equal division when it came to which side of the arguments fans chose.

First, there were the ones who believed that taking the race away from the Easter weekend made sense. Drivers and crew chiefs also have families and they should be with them on the auspicious day. “Probably for the best. The teams/drivers wanted the day off. Having two ‘bye weeks’ a year isn’t a bad thing,” one user commented.

“I’m willing to bet that having Easter off isn’t as much because of old conservative fans, but more drivers and teams wanting an off week, and Easter makes the most sense,” said another.

Financial reasons also play a part in why taking races off Easter Sunday would be better. Ticket sales were low at Richmond, so it does not make any sense for NASCAR to take that kind of risk again. As per one user, NASCAR fans simply did not care about the race.

“Stands looked fairly empty but it was also raining so IDK what sales were really like. As others have said it speaks more to fans not really caring than it does about Nascar breaking some unwritten rule racing on Easter. It was opening weekend at MLB and non-clown teams had great turnouts on Sunday,” they wrote.

And then there was the other side of the argument. The one that put the importance of TV viewership at a time when NASCAR desperately needs some.

“Any other sport wants to be on primetime on a holiday and yet NASCAR fans and industry people say hell no. Race was barely promoted on TV compared to the Bristol Dirt Race and it sounds like Richmond did no promotion around the track. All I did Sunday was watch sports with my family. If there is any holiday in the NASCAR calendar that shouldn’t be raced on it is Mother’s Day. Either take that week off or run it on Saturday night,” one passionate fan commented.

“Only sport in the world who can’t fathom racing on a holiday. Baseball had 15 games on Easter. NFL every Thanksgiving and on Christmas this year on a Wednesday. NBA makes a big deal about Christmas games. But nascar on Easter? Nooooo we can’t do that,” quipped another.

Another user hoped that if not the Cup race, NASCAR should at least have an Xfinity Series race on Saturday during the Easter weekend. “This is the only sport where anybody on the planet would view having an event on Easter Sunday as some great sin but the series does need more off weeks. Hopefully they go back to having a standalone Xfinity race on the Saturday of that weekend,” they wrote.
