The last year’s race at Sonoma Raceway may still feel surreal to the Trackhouse Racing driver, Daniel Suarez, as he became the first Mexican driver to seize a victory in NASCAR’s elite format the Cup Series. But the win was easier said than done as he clinched the win in his 195th Cup Series start, the journey which began back in 2017.
He clinched his win, after holding off Chris Buescher in the final stage of the race and took the lead from Buescher with just 23 laps to go. Even though Buescher tried to snatch away the position but “ran out of steam,” as he had exclaimed post-race.
But Daniel Suarez’s win can surely be credited to his lucky charm that propelled the driver in securing his unlikely victory. And the lucky charm was six-year-old Kinsley Wilkerson, who attended the race with her parents. Moreover, it seemed that the driver hoped that was ushering his lucky charm this year too ahead of the race at Sonoma.

The little girl, Kinsley Wilkerson, whom Daniel Suarez considers his lucky charm, battles with a rare brain and spinal cord cancer. She was supposed to undergo surgery the day after the race, and the Trackhouse Racing team tried to fulfill her wish, before the surgery.
Last year, Daniel Suarez had termed the six-year-old Wilkerson as his ‘lucky charm’ and had asked her, “Now you have to come with me every race. Are you okay with that?”

And the charm of the driver really worked wonders for him as he went to drive his car to the victory lane, after persevering till the end and outlasting Chris Buescher. He even had her name on the windshield of his car.
With his first victory coming from Sonoma, it seems the Trackhouse Racing driver heralded his lucky charms, ahead of this race at the Sonoma Raceway too. The driver took to Instagram, to post a throwback photo from last year’s race.
He also added, the lines, “I woke up thinking about little Kinsley, and how special it was to have her and her family with us at last year’s Sonoma race. Her lucky unicorn has been above my door ever since. If I have half of the strength and resilience she has, we’ll get her that second trophy.”
Daniel Suarez also happens to be an honorary member of Kinsley’s Unicorn Squad.
