Sunday was truly one of the darkest days in the history of Joe Gibbs Racing. The NASCAR team announced that Coy Gibbs, the son of Joe Gibbs passed away, a day after he celebrated his son’s Xfinity title. But for Kyle Busch, the already gloomy day had another layer of sadness etched into it.

The Cup Series race in Phoenix was the two-time champion’s final outing with JGR, and his longtime sponsor M&M’s.

Naturally, all of this was reflected in his post-race interview, as Busch, who is notoriously a very reclusive driver, got a little choked up in the thick of the heavy emotions of the day.

Speaking about his 7th place finish in his last appearance in the #18, Busch claimed he wished for a better finish. “Wish it could have been a top five. Top three. Run a little bit better. But I’ll take the satisfaction in being the top Gibbs car today,” he said.

He then opened up on Coy Gibbs, who he described as a personality not much different from his.

“Coy didn’t take any bullshit and told everybody the way it was and straight to their face,” Busch said. “I loved Coy for that and for his tenacity…he’s done nothing but try to push us all to go forward and win races and be competitive and to be strong and all that.”

“Honestly, that’s what I’ll remember most about him. But the majority of my thoughts and prayers are with Joe and the family. Everybody else. Heather, Melissa, all of them.”

Fans react to Kyle Busch getting emotional in his last NASCAR outing with JGR

Seeing this side of Kyle Busch, a lot of NASCAR fans expressed their own sadness on arguably the most difficult day for the driver, and the entire JGR organization as they also sympathized with him.

A couple of fans claimed they’d never seen Busch like that.

“I have never seen Kyle Busch like that before at the end of an interview,” read one reaction while the other read, I never seen Kyle like that, you can tell how emotional this race was for him.”

“Man this hurts, while it’s not the end of JGR it feels like it’s collapsing from the seams,” a fan wrote while another claimed, “I never thought I’d get emotional and teary eyed hearing Kyle Busch talk, but damn, as much as I hate JGR, I can’t help but feel for everybody involved.”

However, the aptest of these reactions was one in which a fan, a non-KFB fan said how seeing this interview made him respect the driver – “Not a Busch fan, but moments like this make me respect him more.”
