The first-of-its-kind Chicago Street Race of NASCAR is just two weeks away. However, seeing all the criticisms surrounding the event, it is tough to say that the fans are excited. In light of that, NASCAR tried to make the event more interesting by adding things like live music and delicious food. Unfortunately, this led to higher ticket prices, almost twice as much as regular races, making things worse. And just as this was already on everyone’s lips, another topic for debate has come up.
People have been discussing whether having a street race is a good idea. The track is challenging with sharp turns, and some fans are hoping for thrilling moments and maybe even some accidents. On top of that, some local officials are not happy about the race happening in the middle of the city. They have expressed their displeasure about hosting the race in the heart of the city.

The officials responsible for their negative stance have cited several reasons to support their position. One primary concern is the location of the race in Grant Park, which will result in significant street closures and potentially lead to major traffic disruptions throughout the city for two day-long events. The issue of noise generated by the cars, however, has been solved by the implementation of mufflers.
Brendan Reilly, the Alderman of Chicago’s 42nd Ward, has accused the former mayor of concealing information regarding the event. Reilly expressed his discontent by stating, “The greatest frustration that I had with this event coming to Chicago is that the way the previous administration hid it. There was no transparency, and I can tell you speaking with NASCAR. Officials after the fact, they would’ve much preferred to have come and sat with us months in advance of the announcement for this event.”
The new Mayor of Chicago has a different stance as he commended the efforts of NASCAR’s Street Race president in ensuring the success of the upcoming event. The Mayor also emphasized the positive impact of such events on the growth of tourism in the city. A tweet by Adam Stern captured the Mayor’s sentiment. His tweet read,
“New Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson says that he “is impressed with how hardworking and collaborative Julie Giese and the entire NASCAR team have been,” and that “events like the Chicago Street Race are critical to continuing positive tourism growth.”
