NASCAR Fandom Left Teary-Eyed over Outspoken Veteran’s Much-Needed Hailie Deegan Approval Amid Turning Tides

Janet Guthrie in 1977 created a stir in NASCAR that was never seen before. She was perhaps the first female driver to qualify for both the Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500 races in the history of NASCAR. While that was the beginning, drivers like Danica Patrick and Hailie Deegan have made sure to continue the legacy. While female drivers are often seen setting the tracks on fire with their performances in NASCAR, they seldom receive the validation they deserve from experienced and veteran drivers. However, one such driver decided to change that.

Hailie Deegan bagged the 13th position at the Craftsman Truck Series race at Pocono Raceway on Saturday. Her performance has been consistently impressing NASCAR fans, not to mention her killer performance at the two SRX races this year. Former NASCAR ace and 3-time NASCAR Busch Series driver, Kenny Wallace seems to have closely observed Hailie Deegan’s racing performance. And what he has to say certainly made fans emotional.

In his latest YouTube video, Kenny Wallace talked in length about the current and upcoming female drivers of NASCAR, and how the outlook towards female drivers has evolved over the years. He starts with a tone of sheer admiration as he talks about the time he got to observe Deegan’s driving up close. 

“I’m watching Halie Deegan and she’s loose and she’s driving the sh*t out of this race car and uh you know, she’s on it and I’m thinking, ‘man you know that, that girl can drive’,” recalls Wallace. However, his praise for the Ford Performance driver doesn’t end here. 

Keeny Wallace emphasized; “So watching Hailie Deegan not that she didn’t you know listen she-run ate that I run I Run ninth but just watching her with her car control you know I I’m I’m in the back there and because that’s where I started but I watched her left front tire kind of you know she’s chasing that damn car…..”.

“You know I gotta tell you. In drag racing, I once asked somebody, ‘Man, uh what’d you quit for?’ He said ‘some girl lined up next to me and kicked my ass.’ The moral of the story is this – I grew up in 1963. Where you know men always thought you know, ‘she’s a girl’ and if he got outrun by a girl it was thought of as like a little embarrassing that, ‘Hey, you let a girl outrun you boy’,” explained Wallace.

Well, fans are definitely happy that their favorite driver finally got the acknowledgment her performance deserved. Indeed, Deegan’s performance trajectory called for such praise.

Such praise from experienced drivers does not just make the driver in question happy. It perhaps makes their fans happier. Kenny Wallace’s video got an overwhelming response as his video got flooded with comments from Hailie Deegan’s fans, praising him for saying what was long due to be said.

A fan commented; “I think it’s cool of you to give Hailie a shout out Kenny. Her talent is so often clouded by the jealousy & insecurities of “the boys” on the racetrack.

It is safe to say that Wallace earned the NASCAR community’s approval with his approval of Deegan. Hailie Deegan started the SRX 2023 with a bang as she finished in the Top 5 at the event opener. She also finished in the Top 10 in the second race of the series. With the sharp turn her performance took after the series of disappointing results, is Wallace even wrong to praise her?
