The 2022 NASCAR Cup Series is just around the corner and the Busch Light Clash kicks off everything. Admittedly, the real season begins at the annual Daytona 500. Over here, the Next Gen car will face its first real piece of action in a racing scenario. However, speaking of the Daytona 500 itself, there are talks that it could break an unfortunate record.

Apparently, some people are a little worried about the 64th edition of the iconic NASCAR race. The trouble is that this could be the first time that the sport could potentially fail to produce a full 40-car field. Admittedly, only 37 full-time entries started last year’s race, though seven non-chartered entries made up the deficit. All this was in spite of the fact that four of them managed to qualify for the race.

This time around, there are a paltry 39 confirmed entries for the 2022 edition. The non-chartered entries include Team Hezeberg, Beard Motorsports, and MBM Motorsports.

Will NASCAR be able to remedy this before the Daytona 500?

On the bright side, there is still a bit of time before the 2022 Daytona 500. In other words, it offers non-chartered teams a shot at running in the 200-lap “Great American Race”. So, it is pretty much a race between teams to try and fill up the grid as quickly as possible. Otherwise, it will be the first time in 64 Daytona 500s that the field did not see at least 40 cars.

The last time such a situation arose was during the 1968 Firecracker 400 at the Speedway. At that time, just 37 cars made it onto the grid on that race weekend. Since then, the speedway has borne witness to a grand total of 106 races, including 53 of 63 Daytona 500s. So, the sport will be holding out some hope that there are a few last-minute entries for the 2022 edition of the Daytona 500.
