Denny Hamlin, the newfound “bad boy” of the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, has been leaving a blazing trail on the tracks. Four top-five finishes in the first five races, including the roaring win at Bristol Motor Speedway. Then there was the Talladega drama. Finally clinching the 4th spot, which sweetened to 3rd after Kevin Harvick’s DQ, the race was no less than a panic ride for Denny Hamlin after he was penalized to trudge one lap behind, all thanks to a pit road speed snafu.
Imagine trying to make a comeback from that setback. But like a scene straight out of an action movie, Denny Hamlin zoomed back, not just recovering but finishing in the top 5. However, as per the radio talk released by NASCAR, the No. 11 might’ve missed a memo, failing to keep a certain promise he made to his crew chief during that Talladega whirlwind.

At the Talladega Superspeedway, a rollercoaster of emotions and roaring engines culminated in Ryan Blaney seizing the Round of 8 spot after a stellar win at the YellaWood 500 race. Yet, stealing the limelight, as he’s so often done this season, was the charismatic Denny Hamlin of Joe Gibbs Racing.
Navigating through the turbulent currents of the race, Hamlin maneuvered his way back from a pit-road speeding penalty, nabbing a gleaming third-place spot. The position got an extra shimmer when Kevin Harvick, the initial runner-up, faced disqualification.
However, the race was no cakewalk for Hamlin. The 105th lap of stage 2 cast a shadow with a pit-road speeding infraction, Hamlin’s fourth such blunder this season. The hiccup resulted in a lap behind, a sting Denny Hamlin described as “painful.” Yet, showcasing resilience and determination, Hamlin charged ahead, reclaiming his elite position and concluding with an applaudable fourth place.
However, a tidbit from a candid radio conversation released by NASCAR revealed an intriguing exchange. Post-stage 2, having secured a free pass and ready to restart at 25th, Hamlin’s crew chief, Chris Gabehart, threw down the gauntlet, challenging him to lead the pack in the final lap. “I really like where we are at. You drove this thing to the front twice now. It’d be good if we could drive it to the front when it matters,” to which Hamlin confidently responded, “I will.”
However, the grand finale saw Hamlin giving it his all, yet he had to settle for P4. While he might not have kept his word to Gabehart, the whopping +50 points from Talladega surely painted a grin on his face.

Denny Hamlin’s spirited dash to the finish at Talladega wasn’t just about claiming a position; it was a testament to his racing mettle. Finding himself in the plush environs of the top 3 in the playoff table, one could say a victory at Talladega would have been the icing on the cake. Yet, for Hamlin, the results were a delightful dessert in themselves, thanks to his blazing #11 Toyota.
Reflecting on his run, Denny Hamlin remarked, “Not how we drew it up, but a dub (W) is a dub, and that was a dub in our book. As close as it gets to it. I made a statement, bringing me a car fast enough for us to win. And obviously, when I had to go there, I could, and just made the right moves at the right time, and a top five is a long way from where we were with about 15 laps to go.”
