Following the NASCAR Cup race at Road America last weekend, the numbers for the race weekend are in. The bad news was that they were not so great. The viewership plummeted to 1.930 million from 3.078 million in 2021. On a slightly positive note, the Cup race was still the second most-viewed sport in the United States. However, it lost the top spot to WWE, and the fans were not about to let anyone forget about it.

Many viewed the defeat as a pretty embarrassing one for the stock car series. Though it is worth noting that former NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace observed that wrestling was entertaining, others were simply in disbelief that wrestling was able to beat a sport like NASCAR. Especially in a race where we got a new winner in the form of Tyler Reddick.

At least the stock car series can take comfort in the fact that they beat IndyCar. During the same weekend at Road America, the IndyCar drivers were at Mid-Ohio, also a road course.

What else did NASCAR fans say about the poor viewership numbers?

According to a fair number of fans, a large part of the blame lay in not televising the race on the main NBC network. They firmly believe that if the NBCSN network had not shut down, the viewership could have blown WWE out of the water. A few fans took a few digs at WWE, suggesting that their target audience was younger children.

Others still had a hard time comprehending that WWE had more views than NASCAR. Some people attributed it to the fact that it was a road course race, and others felt that the race was boring in parts. Now, the next race is at the Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend, which is an oval. So NASCAR really does not have an excuse if the race is boring or turns in poor viewership numbers.
