The 2022 season was an extremely tough year for Joe Gibbs and his team at Joe Gibbs Racing. While they brought in the big prize as they won the Xfinity Series, they, and especially Ty Gibbs, copped with a loss far bigger.

The demise of Coy Gibbs, son of Joe Gibbs and father of Ty Gibbs, gripped the NASCAR community. His death came in unexpectedly, but what made matters worse was it came right after Ty won his first major trophy.
Joe Gibbs reflects on Ty’s Xfinity Series win
As the NASCAR Awards show took place in Nashville, the host asked Joe Gibbs about his year.
“And I’m here with the NASCAR Xfinity Series Champion owner – coach Joe Gibbs. It’s great to see you. You’ve accomplished so much in different sports. Where does seeing your grandson win a championship, though, rank for you?”

Gibbs said, “I think any parent or grandparent gets a thrill out of seeing their kids chase their dreams. And I think this has been a dream for Ty. This is what he’s wanted to do, so Heather, Coy, Pat, all of us… we get the kick out of it. We love it.”
The host further asked, “Were the emotions any different for you… obviously, you’ve been through many title hunts before, but was it different emotions watching your grandson doing it?”
The JGR owner said, “I will say I kinda get sweaty palms, you know. When it’s Ty, that’s out there. But I think our first two grandkids that came out of school were ready to go and chase things and chase their dreams. Right now we have Ty obviously after it and Jackson is on our pit crew.”
“So I think our family’s all in on NASCAR. We love it. Love being a part of the NASCAR family. I just wanna say to everybody out there also, thank you so much for the way you’ve reached out in these last few weeks for our family,” said the legend.
With Coy gone, it’s up to Joe to harness Ty’s immense potential as a driver. 2023 is going to be a big year for both Gibbs men.
