Anytime a NASCAR racer’s contract is set to expire, it sparks a frenzy of speculation—where will they go next and what are their plans? But in the curious case of Martin Truex Jr, the chatter has shifted and everyone is wondering if retirement is on the horizon.

But they are not wrong to speculate because he did decide to call it quits in 2022 itself. But JGR didn’t want to lose such a gem and persuaded him to stay for another season. Now with another strong season under his belt and a powerful position on the scoreboard, the community can’t help but wonder about his retirement. Although a little birdie told us that he might just have hinted on it to Bob Pockrass for Fox Sports.

Joe Gibbs Racing probably wants Truex Jr. to stick around with them for as long as possible. But we are not sure if he wants to stick around. In an interview ahead of the Darlington race with Fox Sports, he was blunt and said he hadn’t discussed his plans with anyone and he just focused on racing. But he did say that—he needs to put thought into it! He said, “Not sure. I haven’t really talked to anyone about it all yet so I’ve just been kinda focused on the racing part and not really thinking about it. As every year it happens, it sneaks up on you.” He further said there is still “a little time” before he starts thinking seriously and weighs in on the idea of whether he wants to come back next season or not.

His exit rumors are further solidified by another whisper stating that Ryan Truex, his brother, is set to replace him. Ryan Truex has performed well in partial races with JGR in the Xfinity Series, but he doesn’t yet have a full-time seat. If this news is true, Ryan Truex would likely secure a seat in the Xfinity series. Provided that JGR decides to promote him from his current position. But no official statement or confirmation has come as of yet regarding this.

Although there is still time for Martin Truex Jr. to decide, the million-dollar question is: why does he want to call it quits? He has a rich holding over the scorecard and did so last season too, so what motivated him to want to quit?

Martin Truex Jr. feels racing in NASCAR is “a lot.” This is no headline, but for everyone, there comes a point where they question if they have it within them to give it their all and NASCAR demands even more. Last season at the New Hampshire race, he confessed that racing in NASCAR is a lot. However, he meant there are a lot of sacrifices one has to make to be a driver for NASCAR. He said, “It’s not just show up the track, drive, go home. Takes a lot of commitment, a lot of travel, a lot of time missing things with family and friends, and all those things that I’ve done for, you know, 25 years. Do I want to keep doing it? And am I willing to sacrifice all those things again for my team? So, that’s just what I’m thinking about.”

By now, everyone knows that he is indecisive about the decision, and even he believes it. He says he is bad at making big decisions and takes more time than needed. Whereas in NASCAR, decision-making needs to be quick, just like their races!

But that’s the past and his decision to come back for another season was ruled to be in his favor. He, after all, is doing fabulous in the current season. But who knows about the next? Does Truex Jr. need to outweigh his options and decide whether he wants to call it quits? If he does, though, it will be a true loss for the NASCAR community. As Earnhardt Jr. said, “If Truex Jr. leaves NASCAR the community would lose a cool personality.”

What do you think? Will he call it quits? With him surprising even himself with his pace right now, is this the right time to pack up and leave? Let us know in the comments below.
