Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson are two of the biggest names in the motorsport world. While both of them had a great time racing together, their approach toward retirement has been different. Gordon retired from full-time racing in 2015, but his former teammate Jimmie continued racing until 2020. The seven-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion raced in the IndyCar Series from 2021 to 2022, after which he decided to make a comeback.

Last November, Jimmie Johnson announced his return to NASCAR. Along with being the co-owner of Legacy Motor Club, the 47-year-old also confirmed to try his luck behind the wheel. It was quite electric when both Jimmie and Gordon raced in NASCAR. Seeing the former make a comeback, fans were curious to know if the Vice Chairman for Hendrick Motorsports had any such plans. Gordon was quick to clarify his intentions.

Jeff Gordon has clear plans for the future

Jimmie Johnson’s return to NASCAR did ignite the fans to be wishful for a Jimmie and Gordon reunion in some fashion. Speaking on the Rubbin is Racing podcast, the latter cleared all doubts.

When asked about his chances of a return to NASCAR, Gordon said,” I don’t have any desire. I did a race last year in a sports car and I liked it. But I didn’t want to really push myself that hard, I just want to go and have fun, you know… I raced for so long.”

He goes on to add, “I started racing when I was five-six years old and loved the grind but got to a point in my life when I was like I’m ready to grind it out with something else. Luckily, I was able to do TV for Fox [Sports] and now I feel like I’m in a role that I’m just loving, which is, you know, being at Hendrick Motorsports.”

Having been associated with Hendrick Motorsports, Jeff Gordon is entering in his second year as their Vice Chairman. So far, the four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion has proven to be an important coup for Rick Hendrick’s team.

Gordon played an influential role in helping Kyle Larson book an entry in the Indianapolis 500 next year. Not only that, the 51-year-old has been leading the negotiations for Hendrick Motorsports. He has also been urging the team’s drivers to push each other as he and Jimmie Johnson did with each other. It will be interesting to see where Gordon takes Hendrick Motorsports with his vision and experience.
