The dangers of racing in NASCAR are no secret. There have been too many casualties and fatalities which justifies the fact that it is a dangerous profession. But drivers still do it – for the thrill, for their love. Most even let their kids do it. Kyle Busch is one of those.

While racing all these years, he has been part of crashes, witnessed his colleagues in ugly accidents – and recently even saw his brother, Kurt Busch, forced to leave racing due to a crash. Despite all this, he believes in letting his 7-year-old son, Brexton Busch, take part in racing.

A tough decision, obviously, but it has also put him in tough positions. In a Q&A with NBC Sport, Mike Hembree asked him about any scary race incident of Brexton, and recalling that incident, had him sweating bullets.

Kyle said, “The first really scary crash… he was warming up and just figuring out how to race and letting the car drift a little sideways and getting faster. It got loose and he lifted and he was already turned right to catch the slide. The car hooked and went straight into the wall on the frontstretch.”

The Richard Childress Racing driver felt a sense of déjà vu. He said, “When I was 15 and coming out of Legends cars and getting my feet wet in Super Late Models, I did exactly the same thing. I was like, ‘Wow, this is ironic.’ But it taught him that you can crash and you’re OK.”

Busch also added, “It broke his helmet. That was probably the scariest one. He’s flipped once. I wasn’t there to see it. Mom was scared, but Brex got out and said, ‘Hey, can we fix it and race later?’ That was good. He’s a racer’s racer. He’s got it going on.”

Scary for any parent, but then again, shows that love for the sport can trump fear.

Kyle Busch does not feel scared despite what happened to Kurt

2022 was a big year for Busch. With all that occurred during his divorce from Joe Gibbs Racing, a team he had been with for 15 years, the year definitely didn’t have too much to celebrate.

But apart from his troubles in finding a Cup Series seat and sponsors, the Busch family had to undergo another distressing situation – Kurt Busch’s accident at Pocono during qualifying.

In what looked like a regulation crash, hid a lot more. The former 23XI Racing driver spun into the outer wall in the second round of qualifying at Pocono while driving the #45 car. Its impact was so much that the car snapped, and its right front tire hit the wall again.

Fortunately, though, Busch climbed out of the car by himself and didn’t require support to walk toward the infield medical center. The doctors initially asked him to sit out for a couple of races. However, the impact of the crash was far too much on his body. It forced doctors to advise him into taking retirement; a piece of advice that he took up with a heavy heart.

“As I continue to focus on my health and work towards being cleared, I will be stepping away from full-time NASCAR Cup Series competition in 2023,” he said in a statement.
