Derek Jeter is one of the greatest players in MLB history. The Hall of Fame 2020 inductee, has an enormous trophy cabinet. But to name a few stored in that cabinet – 14-time All-Star team, 5 World Series Championships, 1 World Series MVP, and 5 Gold Glove Awards.
Millions of Americans worshipped Captain Clutch. Among those millions was Dale Jarrett. Jarrett himself is no rookie of his sport; he is a Hall of Famer and is listed among the 50 Greatest Drivers of All Time. He also has one Winston Cup Series and 3 Daytona 500 wins to his name. Dale however was a massive fan of Jeter since he was 5 years old.
Speaking to ESPN, he narrated an incident that led to his meeting with the Yankee legend. “I just laughed out loud and told them, ‘Absolutely!’ [when asked at the club if Jeter could share his table] I’d have booted half my friends if I had to!… He wrote his number down on a piece of paper. And as we got ready to leave that night I started laughing. He said, ‘What’s so funny?’ I said, ‘Do you realize there’s 800 females in here who’d die to have this piece of paper with your number on it?'”

When asked about his favorite moment from Jeter’s distinguished career, Jarrett said “It’s unbelievable, that play. He has such a sense for the game of baseball, it’s just incredible. If there’s anybody who’s ever had more base hits to center and right-center as a right-handed batter, I’d be surprised. He is so disciplined. And there’s too many backhands in the outfield to count.”
The play he referred to was from Game 3 of the 2001 American League Division Series. Playing against the Oakland Athletics, when Jeter managed to relay a throw to Jorge Posada, who then managed to dismiss Jeremy Giambi. A marvelous play indeed!
“As much as he makes those plays, though, he’s the type of teammate that has always brought out the best in his teammates, too. I looked at Michael Jordan like that. Michael Jordan didn’t always have the best team around him, but you’d be sure he’d bring out the very best of whatever qualities those people had. Derek is the same way.”
