Chipper Jones worries about MLB-NASCAR crossover—Is this a recipe for disaster or a thrilling innovation?

It is not uncommon for athletes from different sports to find an interest in NASCAR. Baseball, for instance, has a strong fan base that often takes an interest in motorsport. Both are major sports in the USA and when the MLB announced a Braves vs Reds match at Bristol on August 2, 2025, sports fans were not able to contain their excitement.

New diamond markings were added to bring the Bristol Motor Speedway to MLB fans. This collaboration has generated quite a bit of hype around the event, with not only MLB athletes talking to the media about the game but also NASCAR drivers. However, this is new territory for a baseball event, so when Chipper Jones was called on to talk about the new venue, he had more than a few things to say.

On NASCAR’s official YouTube Channel, Kevin Harvick, Chase Elliott, and Larry ‘Chipper’ Jones met for an exclusive interview where the three shared their opinions on the 2025 race. Because the sport in conversation was baseball, Jones was the first one to get asked a question as the host enquired, “What’s your impression, and what are your thoughts on getting to play baseball, if you ever could, right here at Bristol?”

On the diamond, all the focus turned to the 8-time All-Star, who then responded, “You know, I never thought that I would see a baseball field on the infield of a NASCAR track, especially this one, knowing that all these haulers and whatnot are packed in here like sardines.” This makes it clear that this unprecedented announcement came as a shock to both fans and athletes alike. Jones shared his excitement about the new stadium for MLB, but right after that, he shared his true issues with the event.

Jones pointed out the dimensions of the diamond as he explained, “You know, we got the foul lines and whatnot. I’m a little worried about some of these lines over the top, but I’m certainly excited that the Atlanta Braves are going to be a part of this epic event.”

Seeing his former team prepare to participate in a match like never before, Jones is grateful that his former team gets to debut at the new stadium. However, while match lines became a part of his reservations, Chase Elliott had a different perspective to point out from his observations.

Moving on from the MLB legend, the interviewer posed the next question to Elliott. Knowing that the Hendrick Motorsports racer supports the Atlanta Braves, the interviewer asked him, “And Chase, your thoughts? I mentioned you’re a big Braves fan. Now that you’re here, knowing the history of this place and what it’s meant to you and your family, what do you think about a baseball game here?”

Elliott already had his answer locked in as he agreed, “Yeah, I think it’s awesome. You know, Bristol’s always been a special place to me for that reason, being on the racing side, obviously, but just being a Braves fan—that’s all I am. I just love baseball; I love watching.”  He then explained his love for baseball and that he has been a Braves supporter for some time now.

Elliott also expressed his wish to watch the 2025 race in person while hoping that the game does not collide with a race next season. According to the No. 9 Camaro driver, the event will be a “great” one and he believes that fans will enjoy it, closing his response by saying, “I just hope I can make it, you know, selfishly,” he announced his love for MLB to the world.
