William Byron emerged victorious in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway, securing his third win of the season. It was a moment of triumph for the 25-year-old driver, who has been on a roll this year, clinching two wins early on in the season. However, his post-race press conference took an unexpected turn when a journalist reminded him of his previous winless streak.
During the conference, a journalist asked the Hendrick Motorsports driver if he felt the same thoughts going through his head after his two early wins this year. Similar to last year, when he won two in the first eight races and then didn’t win again. Byron’s reaction was immediate, as he responded, “Thanks for the reminder.”

Reminiscing about last year’s similar streak, Byron said, “For sure. I think we had kind of a chip and a little bit of just trying not to let that happen again. So we’ve been probably overexerting ourselves a little bit just to make sure that we don’t repeat.”
The Hendrick Motorsports star further added, “Now I think we’re safely in a groove here where we’ve got to continue our processes, continue what got us here, but it definitely feels different than what we had last year where I felt like after we won those couple races we were kind of — we had just kind of a false confidence, I think.”

Byron went on to acknowledge that his team had been overexerting themselves to ensure they did not repeat the same pattern as last year. He also noted that this year felt different than last, and he had learned from his mistakes. “We’ve learned from that. I have. I don’t intend on doing that again,” he said.

Despite the reminder of his past winless streak, Byron’s victory at Darlington was a remarkable achievement as it marked his 100th win and third of the season. The race was anything but easy, with a series of accidents jumbling the run order and causing several cautions.
On a restart with six laps to go, Ross Chastain and Kyle Larson crashed while racing for the lead, leaving Byron in front of Kevin Harvick, Chase Elliott, Brad Keselowski, and Harrison Burton. Byron surged ahead of Harvick, led the final two laps, and won relatively easily.
The final stage of the race began with a nine-car crash on the backstretch on the first lap. Erik Jones was the catalyst for the same. Chastain won the second stage in a tight battle with Martin Truex Jr. but was involved in another crash in the final laps of the race.
