Hendrick Motorsports’s 2023 season so far has been bittersweet. Fielding four full-time cars, HMS’ #24 William Byron and #5 Kyle Larson are enjoying 1st and 8th positions on the Cup Series standings. However, the same cannot be said for #48 Alex Bowman and #9 Chase Elliott, who constantly lagged behind.
While Alex Bowman did lead the points at the beginning of the season, Chase Elliott on the other hand, seems to have been engulfed in bad luck. Performing poorly on the past weekends, the #9 HMS driver has now turned into the laughingstock of the community.

Following an upward trajectory after his one-race suspension at Gateway, Chase Elliott ranked 5th at Sonoma, 4th at Nashville, and 3rd at Chicago. But his bad luck came back to haunt him at Atlanta where he finished 13th. Blaming himself for his subpar performance, the Hendrick Motorsports star then placed 12th at the Crayon 301, where he was unable to break out from the middle of the pack. Determined to turn his luck around at the Pocono 400, the 2020 Cup Series champion exuded confidence during the pre-race presser at Pocono Raceway.
Explaining how he was disappointed in his performance, Chase Elliott chose to don a positive outlook saying, “Didn’t have the run we wanted to have last weekend obviously, but I thought the prior three to four weeks to my recollection were certainly better and in the ballgame. That was good, and it’s in there, we just have to extract it.”
But Elliott’s positive vibe was crushed during the qualifying laps of the Pocono 400. Entering a turn from the outside line, Chase Elliott guided the #9 Chevy toward the apex. Upon reaching the clipping point, the #9 car lost rear wheel traction, sending Elliott into a spin. Stomping the brake pedal, the HMS star locked up the wheels as he narrowly avoided crashing into the outside wall. As the #9 Chevy came to a halt, the rear tires went flat, leaving Elliott beached near the inside line. Over the radio, the #9 driver could be heard saying, “The tires are gone. What do you want me to do?” The aftermath of the spinout led Chase Elliott’s #9 car to be towed out, leading him to qualify at the 35th spot on the starting grid.

One fan defended the HMS star writing, “Chase will be solid tomorrow… just watch!!!!” to which another fan replied, “Solidly into the wall, you mean. Crisis in confidence, as he cannot make it around the track, all by himself. How will he handle an ill tempered car with 35 other cars jockeying around him? Mr Elliot, meet Mr Wall. Wall, meet Elliot.” Here are some more comments from the fans.
