The last time Michael McDowell parked his car in the victory lane was back in 2021 when he seized the Crown Jewel race of the Daytona 500. Since then two years have passed and the veteran driver has been elusive of a victory, but with the Brickyard title, Michael McDowell has etched his name as a member of the elite club. The Ford driver inherited the lead and held it off till the last drops and also held off Chase Elliott, who is crowned with the ‘King of the road courses’ title.

For many, the victory of Michael McDowell was nothing less than the sheer presence of luck and where the stars were aligned to help the driver out and secure a victory. While fans are left to speculate about their own versions of the victory, the driver seemed to have debunked all the conjectures with a befitting reply, during the post-race interview with the media.

When asked, “The narrative for this is going to be this is like a Cinderella victory. In your estimation is this a Cinderella win?”

To this, the driver retorted, “Absolutely not. I think we’ve been the fastest road course car since this Next-Gen car over the average of it, and I think statistically it’ll show that. I think if you just look at the average finish and you look at average running position, we’ve been a top 5 car every single road course race since this Next-Gen car has come in.”

“Is it a Cinderella story from a lot of different aspects? Maybe. But off of pure performance, like I feel like we’ve been nailing it and having a shot at it. But I also look at it as like, we’re going up against some really big teams with a lot of resources, and to do what we did today is pretty awesome.”
