23XI Racing is not limiting itself just to the asphalt. The Michael Jordan co-owned team is making headlines off the track as well. In February 2022, the team partnered up with Netflix for a documentary series that celebrates the journey of Bubba Wallace.
Titled “Race: Bubba Wallace,” the docu-series now achieves the rare feat of winning an Emmy award. Bubba is the only black driver in the top flight of NASCAR and has had his ups and downs in the Cup. The six-episode-long series takes us into the Cup Series through Bubba’s eyes as he battles it out on the track. 23XI co-owner Denny Hamlin also talks about plans for more such ventures.

The six-part series follows Wallace’s journey and obstacles in NASCAR’s Cup Series. It shows his efforts to have the Confederate flag banned from all events in response to social justice movements and his search for a first victory in the sport’s top division. Having to face established shows like Formula 1’s premier series, Drive to Survive and Prime Video initiative, Race edged over them to win the Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary Series.
Bubba has been one of the division’s biggest proponents of equality and justice. Having to face racist and hateful comments frequently, Bubba does not back away from taking a stand either. Wallace’s first season with 23XI Racing is also covered in the series. Along with that, more somber topics like Wallace’s struggle with depression when the outside world is invading his world.
In 2021, Bubba Wallace joined 23XI Racing, co-owned by Hamlin and Jordan. He was the first black driver to triumph in NASCAR’s top division since Wendell Scott in 1963. It is wonderful to see that despite not receiving a warm welcome from some people, Wallace has only grown further. His recent All-Star Race performance is a testimony to that.

23XI co-owner and Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny speaks about them in a recent interview with Front Stretch. Taking questions from the fans, as the show moves on, a fan enquires about what is next for 23XI in the aspect. As he congratulates Hamlin on the Emmy win, he takes a guess at major plans in the near future.
To this, Denny Hamlin replies, “We would like to for sure. You know, obviously, that was really well put together and you know really proud for Bubba and the whole 23XI team and the guys that you know helped put that whole deal together. They just did a phenomenal job with the production of it. Certainly think that it was very good inside you know inside baseball type of thing where we get to educate fans beyond what you see.”

Further elaborating on how other teams could follow suit, he said, “Us going around circles each and every weekend, it shows the kind of work that goes on for the drivers. The teams and everyone to make that show go on each and every weekend. So I’d love to see it expand and, you know, have another season or have another version of it in NASCAR. We just got to keep working on them.”

Hamlin’s idea of expanding the project looks very promising. Getting more such documentaries like Bubba’s makes it much easier to gap the bridge with fans. Not only that, it expands the scope of NASCAR in terms of collaboration with other fields.
