Will Michael Jordan's NASCAR venture survive the $5 million charter war? What's your take?

23XI Racing has decided not to sign the charter deal as Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan are against the idea. Both the owners of the team are not happy with the deal that NASCAR is providing, and now it’s too late for them to sign the agreement.

The deadline has passed, and now everyone is wondering what 23XI Racing will do for 2025. It is unlikely that NASCAR will cave in and give a team special treatment after the co-owners have made their statements; Critics are now sharing their two cents.

The rules are simple: sign the charter agreement and get monetary benefits from the TV revenue, along with more. Without this, a team is at a disadvantage and 23XI Racing is looking to head down that path. The whole reason behind the charter system being introduced in 2016 is so that teams have a confirmed spot in every race while getting a slice of the revenue.

According to 23XI Racing, the team did not have a fair chance to negotiate the terms of the charter contract, and that’s why they missed the deadline. Considering all of this, Jordan Bianchi spoke on ‘The Teardown’ podcast from Dirty Mo Media about the contract, where he stated, “It’s going to be fascinating to see where this goes.”

Speaking about what Michael Jordan’s team has been up to, Bianchi mentioned, “If you’re 23XI, you’re holding out for a better deal. Okay, that’s your prerogative.” He then got sarcastic when he said, “That’s great, but common sense would say NASCAR is going to give you a better deal than they gave the other 13 teams that signed off. That’s how this works?”

The Athletic reporter then mentioned that other teams would not be happy if 23XI Racing got a better deal. He did suggest a scenario where, among the many options that 23XI Racing has, one of them is reluctantly signing the deal and taking what’s being offered to all the teams on the grid.

Another option suggested by Bianchi was, as he explained, “Two, you [23XI Racing] run as an open car and take the monetary hit because, from what I’ve been told, the fine is $5 million. How much are you really going to end up losing if you run a stolen car? Or three, you fold up shop and say, ‘Hey, we’re done with this. We don’t want to be part of this anymore.'”

From the options provided to the team, it seems like 23XI Racing has gotten itself into a tough spot. The owners’s decision to hold back on signing the deal might have implications for the drivers, with the whole team taking a financial hit. Jordan Bianchi later explained that packing up shop is not an option, and this is why he believes so.

23XI Racing is one of the youngest teams on the grid. The team is running 2 cars this year, with reports of a third one coming. Considering the huge investment made in the third car, it seems like losing out on $5 million on a fine does not seem like a good way for the situation to go for the team.

On top of that, Bianchi mentioned that the team has just invested in a new building, and having so much put into the sport does not make sense if they plan on packing up and leaving. Ultimately, according to the athletic reporter, the situation will only be solved when the team swallows their pride and accepts the contract agreement. If it is still on the table, that is.

The whole argument here is that there are 13 teams who have decided to go along with NASCAR’s contract, and being the only one to fight the tide seems like a losing battle. With that said, do you think that 23XI Racing will settle for NASCAR’s deal? If not, how do you think the team will partake in the 2025 season? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
