It is confirmed that the NASCAR Cup Series team 23XI is going to field an additional entry, a third Cup car, for the 2024 season. According to SiriusXM NASCAR radio host and reporter Danielle Trotta, the 23XI president, Steve Lauletta, shared the news about the team fielding a third entry for select Cup Series races.

Last season, it was Travis Pastrana who piloted the No. 67 Toyota Camry for the team at the Daytona 500, while Kamui Kobayashi drove at the Indianapolis Road Course. TRD president David Wilson did tease about 23XI announcing the third car for the 2024 season, stating, “Stay tuned.” And as per the recent developments, it looks like the #67 car is confirmed to make a return this season.

23XI team co-owners Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin might have just stepped into the NASCAR ring in 2021. But they are eyeing big moves and plans, propelling the team to new heights in the sport. They have two full-time entries, with Bubba Wallace piloting the No. 23 car and Tyler Reddick driving the No. 45. However, with an idea of expansion, last season the team did roll out their third entry, the No. 67 car, for limited races.

The #67 car, since its debut in the 2023 season, has only seen racing action on two occasions. The car made its debut with the driver, Travis Pastrana, at the Daytona 500. On February 14, Pastrana drove the Black Riffle Coffee Company-sponsored car at Daytona International Speedway. After a decent showing in the qualifying rounds, Pastrana and the 67 team managed a P11 position in the main event.

It was Kamui Kobayashi who then took the reigns of the car in the race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It was a Cup Series debut for the Japanese endurance race car driver. However, Kobayashi could not repeat Pastran’s performance and struggled to find his way around the track. He was caught up in multiple wrecks and accidents and could only manage a P33 finish for the team.

There can also be some surprise picks, with some fans even suggesting Carl Edwards and Matt Dibenedetto make their return to the NASCAR circuit.

Given that two of the superspeedway races are done, the team could potentially look to select the Chicago Street race and the Indianapolis road course races as options to field their third entry of the season. However, given that the official confirmation by the team is awaited, the driver’s choices for now are mere guesses.
