Just last week at Martinsville, Chase Elliott made a triumphant return to Cup Series racing after recovering from a severe injury. As the dust cleared and the sidelined driver climbed back into his car, another driver, Kyle Busch, dropped a bombshell about his own health struggles.
During a fairly recent press conference, the RCR driver candidly opened up about his battle with “arthritis.” Furthermore, he also reflected on Elliott’s inspiring comeback.
Kyle Busch discusses Chase Elliott’s comeback and his own health
During the press conference, journalist Dustin Long asked Kyle Busch about the mental challenges athletes face during a comeback, particularly when they have to repeat motions that cause pain. He also inquired how Busch overcame those challenges and whether the mental aspect is as significant a hurdle for Chase Elliott as the pain threshold.
Responding to the question Busch mentioned, “Well, I mean I don’t know how long he’s been walking for. But I don’t think it’s been very long.. maybe 14 days, so just the brunt load. Going for a jog.. I seriously doubt he’s doing that. When you’re in a racecar, you’re hitting that brake pedal and you’re pushing that. You’re pushing load through all of those joints down through the brake pedal.”
‘It’s going to be an uncomfortable scenario for him for the next little bit and what all happens.”
However, Busch clarified that he wasn’t a medical expert or doctor, so his knowledge was limited to his experience. He shared that during his recovery, it wasn’t always comfortable having plates and screws in his body for a whole year. But once they were removed, and he left the hospital, he felt as if he had a brand new foot and was greatly relieved.
He concluded, “Since then, I’ve been alright with it. I’ve had little bouts here or there with probably the first signs of arthritis and whatnot, from just the joints and everything. But otherwise, I’ve been good.”

It wasn’t just Elliott who came back to racing after hurting his leg. Back in 2015, even Busch suffered a similar fate.
Busch faced a major setback when he broke his leg in the closing laps of the Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway. The high-speed crash was a significant challenge for the talented driver, testing both his physical and mental endurance.
Despite the severity of the injury, Busch demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination. With a never-say-die attitude, he made a swift recovery and promptly returned to the driver’s seat.

Therefore, drawing from his own personal experience, Busch can empathize with the challenges Elliott faced as he climbed back into the driver’s seat at Martinsville last weekend. Overcoming adversity and returning to racing after an injury is a testament to an athlete’s resilience and determination, qualities that both Busch and Elliott have showcased throughout their careers.
