It’s not uncommon to see second or third-generation racers in NASCAR. Over the years, there have been several such drivers who have been successful. The most popular names that come to mind are Dale Earnhardt Jr and Chase Elliott. Having a race car driver as a parent or grandparent has made it easier for some to get into the sport, but the pressure of expectations and comparisons comes along. Especially if one is related to an all-time great like the 7-time Cup Series champion Richard Petty. Now, his grandson, Thad Moffitt, is one such driver in NASCAR.

Thad Moffitt isn’t the first driver related to Richard Petty who has delved into the world of racing. His son, Kyle Petty, used to be a full-time driver in the Cup Series. Another one of his grandsons, Adam Petty, was also supposed to have a long career in motorsports but tragically passed away due to an accident during a practice session for the Busch 200 race in New Hampshire in 2000. It looks like Thad Moffitt is currently the only person to carry the Petty legacy into NASCAR, and here is a deep dive into his life.
