When two worlds collide, it can lead to some spectacular things. Let’s take NASCAR and IndyCar, for example. Kyle Larson is making waves no matter where he goes. From his core sport to IndyCar and even a rivalry with the current F1 world champion, Max Verstappen. While this is not a time to discuss the rivalry, it definitely is the right time to talk about his IndyCar performance earlier this year.
Sure, Kyle Larson came in 18th at the Indianapolis 500. But that was only because he had more on his plate than he could chew. Larson did not just decide to try racing in a new class in May. He decided to take on The Double, which means, after finishing 500 miles in an IndyCar. Moreover, he was to fly to Charlotte to race in the Cup Series’ longest race, the Coca-Cola 600.
When Larson got into an IndyCar, it was in a McLaren, and Zak Brown was quite happy with the experience. However, with a second take of The Double on the horizon, Brown spoke about the potential relationship that could be established between him and Hendrick Motorsports.

Zak Brown wants to see where things lead with Hendrick Motorsports
McLaren and Hendrick Motorsports are both well-respected organizations with extensive experience. Let’s not forget that Zak Brown is also the team principal for the McLaren F1 team. This makes him one of the most reputed team bosses in Motorsports. Dale Jr. couldn’t help but call Brown down to his podcast to discuss everything surrounding the Kyle Larson deal.
One of the questions that popped into Dale Jr.’s mind was if Brown had any interest in NASCAR. While Jr. mentioned his familiarity with Brown’s interest in the sport, the main underlying question was, “But what would that look like for McLaren?” Zak Brown wanted to entertain the idea for longer, but he got straight to the point.
The McLaren racing boss mentioned, “I think it probably doesn’t work for us because it’s a massive commitment, right?”
Brown explained the challenges that he will face, “And it’s, you know, multiple car teams, and it’s full-time.” Anticipation picked up when Brown mentioned, “I was, running, on the way over here, and someone asked, ‘Where might your relationship with Rick Hendrick go long term?'”

To answer the question, Brown stated, “I don’t know the answer to that other than I’d like to have a relationship with his team forever because they’re awesome.”
Of course, Zak Brown wants to be involved with NASCAR!
He made it clear when he said, “Maybe we one day put out a car at Daytona with Rick Hendrick.” But in the world of ifs and maybes, he pointed out the harsh reality that it would be too much of a commitment for him to take on. Single-handedly being responsible for one of the top supercar brand’s racing teams is not easy; especially when they run 2 different teams across series with multiple drivers.
But while that might be clearly challenging to a third person, a common misconception is that F1 drivers can do well in NASCAR.

Zak Brown has always been a man of collaboration. This can be noticed from the times that he tried to get Fernando Alonso to race in IndyCar. Everything started at the Indianapolis 500 back in 2017. McLaren and Andretti Autosport gave him a car, in which the Spanish F1 World Champion qualified fifth and led 27 laps before retiring due to an engine failure.
However, on Dale Jr.’s podcast, Brown spoke about the 2019 incident. The point that the McLaren racing boss was making became clear when he stated, “I got a rude awakening in 2019 when we didn’t qualify with Fernando at Indy, which was both the best and worst thing that’s ever happened.”
He came clean about how embarrassing it was for him to see the great Alonso not qualify in IndyCar, but also spoke about what a learning experience that was for him. Giving his final verdict saying, “Don’t underestimate how difficult all these racing series are. Just because you’re really good in Formula One doesn’t mean you’re going to walk into NASCAR and kill it, or vice versa.”
