Earlier, reports emerged that Matt Kenseth will be in the commentary booth for the Auto Club Speedway race. Even though he is 49 years old, he never truly retired from the sport. In fact, his last NASCAR race was in 2020, when he subbed in for an ousted Kyle Larson.
Recently, he spoke about his supposed ‘return’ to the NASCAR arena, in a different role. He said, “Absolutely not. So, I never really officially retired. Everyone always says, ‘Matt, come out of retirement again.’ But I’ve never really officially retired. I would if we had pensions or something like the NFL.”
He confessed that he often joked with his crew members about seeing different NASCAR drivers taking on the role. When asked if he would ever take the plunge, he would reply that if he was on TV, it would mean that he is broke. Owing to this, he expected to hear from them to tease him about taking the opportunity.

Up until now, a TV role was never on the cards because he never thought he would get a shot. However, he did admit that the timing of this opportunity was almost too perfect. Matt Kenseth obviously likes Clint Bowyer and believes that he is doing a fine job in the booth. At the same time, he also heaped praise on commentator Mike Joy and dubbed him a TV legend.

With the two of them manning the booth, NASCAR really couldn’t pick two better people for the job. As per Kenseth’s testimony, Bowyer and Joy are excellent at their jobs. So, when he does eventually join them, he has a feeling that the two of them will make life easier for him.
